B. 'POULSON.
DEVICE FOR DETAGHING BUTTONS.
N0. 367,319. Patented July 26, 1887.
FIG.I.
MM mm N. PETERS. P'howLilho r-aphen Washingion, D. C,
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
BRITTON POULSON, OF FORT WAYNE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF l'O WILLIAM D. SOHIEFER, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVlCE FOR D ETAQH|NG BUTTONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,319, dated July 26, 1887.
' Application filed February 12, 1887. Serial No. 227,390. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I; BRITTON PoULsoN, of
Fort Wayne, county of Allen, and State ofIndiana, haveinventeda new and usefulImprove -ment in Button-Detaehing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
Fig. II represents a section through the device, taken in line with the intersection of the converging blades or cutters; and Fig. III is a horizontal section through one side of the lower end of the case, showing the manner of applying or attaching the cutter to the case.
A represents a hollow cylindrical case, made of any suitable material, preferably of metal, closed at one end and open at the other, as shown. Upon said open end a cap, A, is screwed or adapted to be placed and fastened in any suitable manner. Near the opposite end of this cylinder or case there is a slot, as shown, and upon either side of this slot are flanges a a, substantially of wedge shape, tapering toward the closed end of the'casing A, and provided at or near their upper edges each with a groove, a, on their inner adjacent faces, for the reception of the cutter-plate B, which is adapted to slide therein and be retained. The cutter B is formed of a steel plate provided with a V-shaped slot, (shown at B, Fig. 1,) the adjacent edges of which are sharpened or have a knife-edge, which will cut the thread which secures the button to the shoe. I
G 0 represent two fiat springs located on either side of the center of the slot B, and
securedby screws 0 c or otherwise to the flanges a a or shoulders formed upon said flanges, aspreferred. These springs diverge from the cutter inwardly, jand their'pnrpose is to hold the head of the shoe-button under them and to draw the button. away from the shoe-flap, so that the knife may act on the securing-thread, and not on the shank of the button. The cylindrical casing Ais further depressed, as shown at o for allowing room for the head of the button to pass beneath the springs O O and into the hollow casing.
.In operation the device is grasped by the hand and so placed relatively to the shoe from which thebutton is to be removed that the button will enter the slot in the casing A, the head of the button traveling beneath the springs O O and the shank between the same. As the device is advanced or moved along by the operator, the head of the button slides beneath the springs, and is thus forced or drawn away from the shoe to which it is sewed, and as it continues to approach the end ofthe V-shapcd cutter the converging blades or edges thereof act upon the threads or strands which securethe button to the shoe and sever the same, the springs O 0 serving to withdraw the shank of the button far enough away to prevent any liability of the cutter being injured by contact with the same. As soon as severed. from the shoe the button drops into the cylindrical casing, and. is there retained until a number have collected, when by removing the cap A the buttons may be removed therefrom.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclairn as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- r 1. In a device for removing buttons, the
combination, with the case or hollow cylinder, of the converging blades or cutters, arranged substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the case or cylinder, of the converging blades or cutters and springs diverging inwardly therefrom, for the purpose and substantially as described.
3. In a device for removing buttons, the combination, with the hollow case A, pro .vided with the cap A, of the converging cutters B, arranged and adapted to operate snb- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set stantially as described. my hand this 8th day of February, A. D.
4. In a device for removing buttons, the 1887. combination, with the case having the re- BRITTON POULSON. 5 movable cap, of the converging cutters and W'itnesses:
the springs diverging inwardly from the eut- WM. D. ScI-IIEFER, ters, all substantially as described. L. S. NOTKER.
