substantially vertical between water carrying drums, it is the custom to employ a number of battles to deflect the gases from the furnace as much as possible into contact with the entire outer surface of the tubes. These ballles are arranged longitudinally of the tubes and generally are provided with smaller transverse baille extensions to increase the deflection of the hot gases as they pass from one gas passage into the other.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an improved bail'le of this type.
Another object is to provide a battle construfction wherebythe transverse balile extension can be quickly replaced.
Another object is to provide a battle adapted to be applied or removed in sections to tacilitate repair and the like.
Another object is to provide an improved baiiie extension by means of which expensive special large tile pieces may be done away with.
Other objects and features of the invention will be apparent from a consideration of the detailed description taken with the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a schematic sectional View showing the application of my inventlon to a standard type of tube boiler;

The bailie of my invention is adapted to be applied to various types of boilers, but is here shown attached to a well known type of boiler consisting of tubes 10-1O with the usual connecting drums 11-11. A pair of baflies is provided longitudinally of the tubes so as to result in the production of a number of gas passageways 12, 13 and 14, respectively, the gases being deflected around these passageways by means of: the battles.

At a proper place on the composite ballle, a .bafiie extension is provided for the purpose of still further deflecting the gases into contact with the tubes at right angle with the passageway through which the are flowing. This transverse batlle projection is made removable from the baflie as a whole and contains novel features which will now be described.
A number of tiles 17 are provided of angular shape but in other ways corresponding with the standard tile section 16. These tiles 17 are laid side by side to form a row of tiles in the same manner as for the standard type oi tiles. Two such rows are formed "faced oppositely to each other with a narrow space or slot between them into which plain tile strips 18 are inserted in the manner shown the plain tile being held by the angular proj ection on the angular tiles 17 and projecting upwardly a distance above the baiile wall, de pending upon the deflecting action desired. Above this battle extension, the tiles 16 are again laid to produce the standard bat-lie formation, with the exception that the tiles are reversed with respect to the tiles below This reversal is necessary to take care 01 the grooves and projections 16 and 16 and by so reversing the tiles, a single type of angular tile 17 can be used, whereas it the reversal were not made, it would be necessary to provide two types of angular tiles 17, namely one provided with a groove end and the other with a projection end.
\Vith this battle construction there are no expensive angular tiles which must be replaced whenever accidents or overheating cause a breaking of the battle extension. All that is necessary, is to replace the plain tile, and even should it be necessary to replace any portion of the angular tile strip, only a single type of tile is necessary and that of a standard height, independent of the particular furnace or boiler into which it Will be placed.

What I claim as new and desire to secure 7 by United States Letters Patent is:

3. A boiler ball'le comprising a pair of relatively fiat sections disposed in a single plane, said sections terminating in opposed angle portions with a space therebetween, and a section of plain tile disposed between the flat section and held by the angles, so as to constitute a battle extension from the boiler ballle proper.
4. A boiler bafile consisting of two relatively flat refractory sections separated from each other'and disposed end to end, transverse portions of angular form on each of the fiat sections, and a plain tile projection held between said angular portions.
5. The combination with a vertical boiler batlle of a relatively short, generally hori- Zontal ballie extension, said extension comprising two rows of oppositely faced relatively short legged angles, and an insert between them oii flat projecting tile sections.
