Specification of Letters Patent.

v To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN E. Lnwrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainfield, county of Union, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bafiies for Steam- Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a special bafile arrangement as appled to a Babcock & Wilcox boiler, and will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a vertical section on the plane of the line 11 of Fig. 3; Fig. 2 a horizontal section on the plane of the lines 22 of Figs. 1 and 3; and Fig. 3 a vertical transvers section on the plane of the line 33 of Fig. 1. In order to make Fig. 3 appear in such position that a row of tubes in Fig. 1 will be in the same line, in the drawing, as in Fig. 3, the latter has been rotated from its normal vertical position.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates a portion of the water tubes of an inclined bank of tubes of a Babcock & Wil cox boiler, said tubes being connected to upper and lower headers, not shown. 2 designates the bridge wall at the rear of the furnace. Upon the bridge wall rests a line of special tiles 3 which partially surround the lowermost row of water tubes. Extending forward from the bridge wall to the lower end of a transverse bafiie, is a special bafiie made up of lower and upper tile pieces 5 and 6, respectively. The purposeof this longitudinal bafiie is to deflect the gases from that part of the furnace over which it extends, and to cause them to flow upward at the left of the transverse or vertical bafile. As heretofore constructed the longitudinal baffie consisted of a single line of tiles which deteriorated rapidly and permitted leakage of gases through the joints. Furthermore, explosions in the furnace loosened the tiles resulting in an increase in the gas leakage.
To overcome the defects in the usual form of bafile I have designed the present forni consisting of the two lines of special tiles 5 and 6. The tiles 5 rest directly upon one of the rows of water tubes, the lowermost row in the arrangement shown, and the tiles 6 are so laid as to break joint with the lower tiles in both directions. As shown in Fig. 1, the joints 7 which run in the direction of the bridge wall, are broken, that is, there is an overlying tile at each such joint; and as shown in Fig. 3 the joints 8 parallel with the tubes are also covered. Leakage of the hotfurnace gases between the joints is thus practically prevented. The tiles 5 and 6 are symmetrical and are of the same size for all parts of the baffle except at the edges where tiles of a special size are used. These special size tile can be made by cutting them from the full size tile, or they may be specially molded.
It will also be seen that the tiles 5 and 6 are so formed as to fit the water tubes, and that they are laid in such manner as to be held firmly in position so that any explosion of the gases within the furnace will not displace them.
Although I have shown the baffle 56 placed between the two lowermost rows of water tubes, it may be placed between the second and third rows from the bottom, the construction being adapted generally for use in any part of the boiler.
By closing the spaces between the tubes and the tiles 3 with a plastic material, a gastight joint will be provided between the top of the bridge wall and the bafile 5-6.
The vertical bafile which extends from the baffle 5-6 is made up of two lines of cast iron flame plates 9 and 10 placed at angle with each other, and a line of tiles 4 on the side of the battle which comes in contact with the hottest gases. The plates 9 and 10 .and the tiles 4 are formed to fit in between and around the boiler tubes. The flame plates 9 and 10 project inside of the furnace side of the wall 11, as shown in Fig. 3.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A water tube boiler having rows of water tubes and a baflie placed between two of said rows and extending parallel therewith, said baffle being composed of a plurality of layers of tile pieces so arranged that the tile pieces of one layer break joints with those of the other layers in both directions.
2. A water tube boiler having rows of water tubes and a bafiie placed between two of said rows and extending parallel therewith, said bafie being composed of a plurality of layers of tile pieces so arranged that the tile pieces of one layer break joints with those of the other layers in both directions, and a cross baflle extending from said longitudinal baliie across the water tubes.
3. A water tube boiler comprising rows of water tubes, a furnace bridge wall, and a bafiie between two of the rows of water tubes extending from the bridge wall, said baflle being composed of two lines of special tile pieces so placed with respect to each other as to break joints.
4:. A water tube boiler comprisin rows of water tubes, a furnace bridge wa l, and a baflie between two of the rows of water tubes extending from the bridge wall, said bafile being composed of two lines of special tile pieces so placed with respect to each other as to break joints and extending from the bridge wall to the cross bafiie which comes at the rear of the first pass.
5. A water tube boiler having two rows of water tubes staggered relatively to each other, and a baffle between said rows, said baifie being made up of a plurality of courses of tile pieces, the tiles of one of said courses having joints at one set of water tubes, and the other course having joints betwen said rows of water tubes.
6. A water tube boiler having two rows of water tubes staggered relatively to each topics at this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the "Commissioner of Patents.
