STEAM-BOILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1910.
Application filed June 12, 1908. Serial No. 438,084.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that THOMAS F. Monnrn, cleceased, in his lifetime a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, and a citizen of the United States, previous to his death had invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which I, THOMAS F. Mon- RIN, Jr., a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, and a citizen of the United States, as administrator of the estate of said THOMAS F. MoRRIN, present the following full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to steam boilers and has for its object to improve the construction of such boilers and to provide an increased heating surface, whereby the rapid economical generation of steam may be facilitated and the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings therein.
Figure 1 is a front elevation with part of the casing broken away and parts shown in section of the improved boiler. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with part of the casing broken away. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 4: is a front elevation with part of the casing removed and parts shown in section of a modified construction. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of said modification with part of the casing broken away and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the same with part of the casing removed and parts shown in section.
The invention as illustrated is embodied in a water tube boiler but is applicable as well to other species of boilers.
The grate 1 is of usual construction and the boiler is provided with the usual fuel doors 2 and ash pit doors 3. The steam drum 4 is provided with a tube sheet 5 which is of the shape of a somewhat flattened V and each side of said tube sheet receives transversely inclined tubes, which are ar-. ranged in two sets 6, 7, and at their lower ends are received in tube sheets 8, 9 of manifolds 10, 11. These tube sheets are parallel with the corresponding faces of tube sheet 5. A baffle plate 12 is arranged vertically among the tubes 6, 7 and two spaces are left between the baffle plate and the casing at the front and rear edges of the baffle plate for the free passage of the gases of combustion. t These battle plates serve to cause the flame to pass by a circuitous route through all the tubes. Blow off pipes 13, 14, are connected to manifolds 10, 11 respectively.
In Figs. 1, 2 and 8, the longitudinally inclined tubes are arranged in three sets or groups, of which two are shown in Fig. 2 and are designated 15, 16 and the said three groups of tubes are connected to front headers 17, 18, 19 and rear headers 20, 21, and 22. Circulation pipes 28, 24 and 25, connect the headers 17 18 and 19 with each other and with the steam drum. A feed water pipe 26 is connected to manifolds 10 and 11 and to the rear headers 21, 22. The side casing 27 extends from front to rear of the boiler and is closed at the top by angle irons 28, or other suitable material and these angle irons close the space between the said casing and the steam drum, on both sides of the flue 29, being omitted within the flue.
In Figs. 4:, 5 and 6, the boiler is somewhat smaller and the two lower groups of longitudinally inclined pipes and their headers are omitted and but one group 15 of such pipes which are connected by circulation pipes 25 to the steam drum. The construction in other respects is in substance the same as that of Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
What is claimed is:
A steam boiler comprising a steam drum, a plurality of manifold chambers, a plurality of groups of transversely inclined tubes connecting said drum and manifolds, an inclined baffle plate disposed intermediate each of said groups extending between said drums and manifolds having free spaces at its edges, a plurality of longitudinally inclined tubes disposed between said groups and headers connecting said last named tubes.

Morrz'n, deceased.
