The baflies or walls of this general type which have heretofore been used in water tube boilers, heat exchangers and economizers were made up of tile or blocks of such construction that a tile designed for use with a battle disposed at a certain angle to the tubes could not be used in the construction of a baffie disposed at a different angle to the tubes. Nor could a tile designed for use with a straight baffle be used in the construction of a baffle provided with a curved portion. The baflles used in boilers and similar structures vary in'shape and in the angle at which the battles are disposed to the tubes, and in many instances where a horizontal tube boiler is provided with a plurality of transverse baffles, each battle is disposed at a different angle with relation to the'tubes of the boiler. Accordingly, the cost of constructing bafiles of the general type mentioned is increased considerably by the necessity of keeping on hand a large number of baflle tile of diiferent shapes, suitable for use in the construction of straight and curved bailles and battles disposed at different angles to the tubes. The work of erecting such bafiles is also complicated by the necessity of using special tile for each baffle of a particular angle or shape.
One object of my invention is to provide a universal tile, block or member that can be used in the construction of battles or walls of various angles and shapes.
Another object is to provide a battle or wall that is made up of tile, blocks or similar members which are adjustably combined and interlocked with each other in a novel manner.
Another object is to provide a battle or wall of the kind just referred to, in which the cooperating interlocking portions on the tile are of such design that substantially gas-tight joints will be produced between the tile.
And still another obj ect of my invention is to provide a novel method of constructing a bathe fer a boiler or similar tubular structure.
To this end I have devised a battle tile, block or element that consistsof a member provided on two ofits surfaces with portions that interlock with co-operating portions on adjacent tile. when said member is arranged in alignment, in ofisetrelation; or in reversed relation with said adjacenttile. To construct a baflie or wall from tile of the kind mentioned, the tile are laid up in horizontal courses orin vertical rows, and if it is desired to change the shape or angle of the bafile,.the adjacent tile are simply arranged in offset relation and in some instances the adjacent tile are arranged in reversed relation.

In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention,
. A designates a tile or block that is adapted to be used to form the intermediate. portion of a bafl'le or wall through which tubes 1 or other devices extend, and B and C designate end tile or blocks that are adapted to be used to form the end portions of said baffle. Each of said tile consists of a member, usually formed of refractory material, provided in a some of its faces with cut-outs or recesses that form portions of the tube holes in the'bafiie. Said tile can be of various shapes and sizes, and can be designed so that they can be arranged either horizontally or vertically in thebaflle of which they form a part. -Usually, said tile will be arranged in horizontal courses and cut-outs or recesses will be formed in the top and bottom faces of same,
so as to form holes through which the tubes pass. In the preferred form of my invention, as herein illustrated, each of the intermediate tile A co-operates with or contacts with three tubes disposed in triangular relationship, but it will be obvious that said tile can be made longer, so as to'co-operate with a greater numberof tubes; If desired, said tile can be designed so that they can be arranged vertically in the tube bank.
As shown in Figure 4, the intermediate tile A is provided on one of its horizontal faces with a semi-circular-shaped recess 2,
that forms one-half of a tube hole, and it is provided on its other horizontal face with two segmental-shaped recesses 3, each of which forms one quarter of a tube hole, the
recess 2 being arranged intermediate the recesses 3. The vertical front and rear faces of said tile are disposed at right angles to its top and bottom faces, so that when a'plurality of such tile are arranged edgewise to form superimposed, horizontal courses, as shown in Figure 3, the recesses 2 in the top faces of thetile that constitute one horizontal course will co-operate with the recesses 3 in the bottom faces of the tile of the next higher horizontal course to form tube holes tive courses.

Each end tile B isprovided on its top face with a semi-circular-shaped recess 2 and in its bottom face with a segmentalshaped recess 3 arranged at the inner corner of the tile, and each end tile C is provided in its bottom face with a segmental-shaped recess S located at its inner corner. The top and bottom faces of the tile A, B and C can either be disposed at'an acute angle with relation to the front and rear faces of said tile, as shown in Figures 3 and 7, or the top and bottom faces of said tile'can be disposed at substantially right angles to the front and rear faces of the tile, as shown in Figure 10. Preferably, the intermediate tile and the end tile are provided with top and bottom faces disposed substantially at an acute angle relatively to their frontand rear faces, so that when said tile are laid up in longitudinal alignment with each other, as shown in Figure 7, they will .form a straight, smooth-faced b'aflle whose longitudinal axis is disposed at the average angle or conventional angle with relation to the tubes 1 that pass through the baffle;

When tile of the design shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6 are used, the vertical joints of the respective course will be arranged in staggered relation, as shown in Figure 3.
if it is desired to construct a baflle 1 provided with a curved portion, as shown in Figure 2, the tile in the respective horizontal courses that constitute the curved portion of the baffle are arranged in offset relation, as shown in Figure 8, so as to produce a baffie whose front side approximates a curve represented by the broken line y. This, of course, is made possible by reason of the fact that the top and bottom faces of the til-e are provided with corrugated portions of the same shape and dimensions that mesh with each other, and which are of sufiicient area to insure the various courses being held in operative relationship, both when they are in alignment and in offset relation. By offset ting the respectlve courses more or less, the
curvature of the baffle. can be easily changed.
If it is desired to produce a baffle whose longitudinal axis is substantially straight and disposed at an angle greater than the average angle or conventional angle represented b the baffle shown in Figure 7, the tile of the respective courses are offset rearwardly slightly, as shown in Figure 11, thus producing a battle whose front face, represented by the broken line if in Figure 11, is inclined at a greater angle than the front face of the baffie shown in Figure 7. To produce a baffle whose longitudinal axis is disposed at an angl less than the average angle or conventional angle, the tile of the respective courses are offset forwardly slightly relatively to each other, as shown in Figure 12, thereby producing a battle whose front face, represented the broken line if, is inclined at a less angle than the front face of the baffle shown in Figure 7 ln constructing a balile .2 whose longitudinal axis is disposed at right angles to the tubes, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, tile of the kind shown in Figure 10 can be used, or tile the kind shown in Figure 7, can be used if the tile in alternate courses are arranged in reversed relation, as shown in Figure 9, the co-operating ribs and grooves 5 and 6 on the horizontal faces of the tile being of such shape that they will mesh properly and produce substantially gas-tight joint-s between the tile of the [respective horizontal courses, when the tile of the respective courses are arranged so that the front and rear faces of same are disposed'in parallel relation, and
when the tile of the respective courses are arranged so that the front and rear faces of a baffle or wall constructed from such tile is the co-operating substantially gas-tight, as portions on'the tile which hold the tile in adjustable, interlocking relation, are of such design that they form tortuous joints between the tile that effectively prevent gases from passing'through said oints;
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
