No.171,880. I I Patented Jan..4,1876.
I f)" [I 3/ M k f I f I N. PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY B. STILLMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT-IN UMBRELLA RlB-TlP RETAINERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.1 71,880, dated January 4,1876; application filed June 28, 1875.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be itknown that I, HENRY B. STILLMAN, ot' the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Tip-Cups for Umbrellas, Parasols, &c., of which the following is a specification:
The tip-cups that have heretofore been employed upon the handles ofumbrellas to hold the ends of the ribs together have usually been upon a metal cylinder. and movedback and forth by hand; but in some cases the tip-cup has been pressed toward the tip by a spring.
My improvement is made for dispensing with the sprin g, and locking thetip-cup toward the tips, so that the cup will not slip back accidentally and liberate the tips of the ribs. This accomplished by one or more ribs upon the cylinder, and corresponding notches in the eye of the tip-cup.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a section of the umbrella tip-cup in the position for retaining the tips. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the tip-cup drawn up. Fig. 3' is a sectional plan at the line 00 m, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is an inverted plan at the line y 3 Fig. 2.
The tip-cup a is of sheet metal, of any usual character, except that it has one or more I grooves through the metal at the central openat such a point that the tip-cup when slipped down upon the cylinder 1) can be turned partially to bring a portion of the tip-cup that is not grooved below the ribs; hence the ribs will hold the cup in position and retain the tips 0 of the umbrella or parasol.
The cup can be drawn back when turned, so that the grooves correspond with the ribs. Two or more ribs and grooves can be used.
I claim as my invention- The-umbrella tip-retainer composed of the cylinder 1), with rib t, in combination with the sliding cup a, having the groove 0, arranged to operate in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 25th day of June, A. I). 1875.
H. B. STILLMAN.
