UNITED STATES PATENT GEF-ICE.
ARTHUR REGINALD PEPPIN, OF MAINTONGOON, VICTORIA.
UMBRELLA-FRAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,436, dated November 14, 1893.
Application led March l0, 1893. Serial No. 465.446. (No model.) Patented in Victoria November 2, 1891, No. 9,199, and in England December 8, 1891, No. 21,437.
To all whom i may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR REGINALD PEPPIN, a Britishl subject, residing at Maintongoon, in the Colony of Victoria, have invented Improvements in Umbrellas and Parasols, (for which I have obtained a patent in the said Colony of Victoria, No. 9,199, bearing date November 2, 1891, and in Great Britain, No. 21,437, dated December 8, 1891,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of umbrellas and parasols so as to render the same adjustable as hereinafter described in which the centralsleeveguide 'or runner (usually in the form of a ring) working up and down the handle of the umbrella or parasol is made to curve around the handle in the shape of a horse shoe having the ordinary series of projections or teeth on itsv outer surface, to which ordinary stretchers are attached by means of a double wire tie screwed through two small holes at each side of the sleeve or runner the stretchers connecting in the ordinary manner with the ribs of the-umbrella or parasol. To the arms of the runner is pivoted by pin connection a bifurcated stretcher shaped like a tuning fork, the shank at its termination being pivoted in the ordinary Way to a rib of the umbrella or parasol. The under edge of said bifurcated portion of the last named stretcher is notched so as to form a ratchet for adjusting and securing the handle in the required position as hereinafter described. The runner and fork together forman oblong slot in which the stick lies, the right end of which bears against the stick and travels up same in the ordinary way until it compresses and passes over the ordinary wire sustaining Spring, which spring, on its being again released, protrudes from the stick and supports the runner retaining the umbrella open to its full extent. The umbrella being opened fully the runner is released by a slight upward pressure when the handle may-be drawn laterally along the slot out of its perpendicular position, the spring in the handle working in the ratchet aforesaid, thereby retaining the handle or stick at the required angle.
The object of the said invention is to enable a person using the umbrella to readily v adjust and secure the same so that the top of narily constructed umbrella in a strong Wind necessitates the lowering of the handle of the umbrella to an anglewith the body oi' perhaps forty ve degrees often in a strong wind and requiring the use of both hands.
In order that my invention may be more perfectly understood reference may now be made to accompanying drawings.
Figure l shows the bifurcated stretcher pivoted at F to the sleeve guide or runner B detached from the umbrella for the purpose of showing the novelfeatnres of the invention claimed. Fig. 2 is a plan of the said sleeve guide and bifurcated stretcher. Fig. 3 shows the umbrella canted or thrown out of center, the handle or stick being removed from the sleeve guide to the extreme left of the bifurcated stretcher and there secured by means of the ratchet and Wire spring.
In the figures, A is the bifurcated stretcher pivoted at F to the sleeve guide or runner B, the reverse end or shank being attached to rib of umbrella as an ordinary stretcher as shown in Fig. 3. Y
D are the snotches for engagement with ordinary upper retentive spring in handle or stick E.
The sleeve guide and bifurcated stretcher maybe iitted so that the stick may work from center to the right or reversely as shown in the drawings.
The materials used throughout will be those ordinarily used by the trade in the manufacture of umbrellas and parasols. Y
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination,in an umbrella, the haudle, the runner having an open side to receive the handle, the stretchers pivoted to the IOO runner, oneof saidstretchersafordingabearcatch in the handle adapted to engage the ing and guide for the handle as it is shifted same, substantially as described.
