' J. T. SMITH.
UMBRELLA 0R PARASOL. No. 353,173. Patented Nov. 23, 1886.
WITNESSES,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES r. SMITH, on NEW YORK, N. v.
UMBRELLA OR PARASOL.
EPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,173, dated November 23, 1886.
Application filed September 18, 1886. Serial No. 213,865. (No model.)
My invention relates to improvements inv parasols or umbrellas; and it consists of a spring-catch, in combination with certain other parts of an umbrella-frame, for the purpose of holding the frame when closed close to the stick, and to thereby dispense with the use of a tip holder or cup for holding the ends of the ribs, and with the lower thumb-spring, as hereinafter described and particularly claimed.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view in elevation of an umbrella-stick illustrating my invention; and Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5, details. Fig. 1 shows a stick and a runner and notch thereon, with stretchers attached to the notch, and ribs and rib notch, with the ribs and stretchers closed against the stick. A is the runner, provided with a notch, Z), to which the stretchers at one end are secured in the usual manner; but this runner differs from others in being provided with a tube, 0, extending up from the notch, and which tube-extension is provided with a springcatch, D. This bent up to form wings e e, and is, held onto the barrel 0 by means of a split metal clip, d, secured at one end to the notch and at its opposite end covered by a band, 9, as shown in Fig. 4; but I prefer to solder the winged spring to the tube, as indicated in Fig. 1. frame is closed, the stretchers enter between the wings e e, which serve to hold the stretchers close to the stick as well as the rib. One or more of these spring-catches may be used.
The extensiontube is extended up the stick, so that when the frame is opened the end of the tube 0 will come in contact with the rib-' notch (I, thus dispensing with the stop-ring usually employed for that purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In combination with an umbrella or parasol, the runner provided with atube-extension, 0, above the runner-notch,a spri ng-catch secured to said extension,,,and stretchers secured to the notch and adapted to be held close to the stick by said spring-catch when the frame is closed, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES T. SMITH.
