UNITED STATES ELI BAARSGARD, OF MABEL, MINNESOTA.
POCKET ASH CONTAINER.
Application filed November 19, 1926. Serial No. 149,472.
This invention appertains generally to new and useful impgovemcnts in containers and has more particular reference to a novel and simplified pocket container for receiving cigar and cigarette ashes.
The primary object of the present 1nvention is to provide an improved container of the above character which may be conveniently carried in the pocket so that cigarette and cigar ashes may be deposited therein.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide such an improved pocket container of the above character having associated therewith new and novel means whereby the ashes may be easily and quickly deposited within the container and which will effectively prevent the accidental spilling thereof.
Another object of the p sent invention is to provide such an improved pocket container of the above character including a body having an opening therein, a cover hinged to the body also provided with an opening, and slide plates for opening and closin the said openings.
A further object of the present invention is to provide such an improved pocket container of the above character which is simple yet durable in its construction, prac tical and eflicient in use, easy and cheap to manufacture and well designed for the purposes forwhieh it is intended.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and formation of parts to be more fully hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a front view of an improved pocket container constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a rear view thereof.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the same.
Figure 4 is an edge view of the container.
Figure 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the upper portion of the container showing the ash receiving openings.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Figure 4:.
Figure 7 is a sectional View taken on line 7 7 of Figure 1.
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken on line 38 of Figure 1.
Referring now more in detail to the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration has been disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention. it will be seen that the improved container embodies in its construction a body 10 and a cover 11 which is hinged to the body as at 12.
The body 10 is substantially rectangular in formation and comprises the front and rear walls 13 and 14, end walls 15 and 16 and a bottom wall 17. The front wall 13 of the body is bent as shown in Figure 8 to provide the spaced longitudinally extending parallel guideways 18 and 19 and the said front wall is provided between the guidways and adjacent its upper end with an ash receiving opening 20. For the purpose of closing this opening, there is slidably mounted within the said guideways 18 and 19, a slide plate 21 provided at its upper and lower edges with spaced fingers 22 and 23 which serve to facilitate the slidin of the said plate. The slide plate is furt her provided at its upper end with a lug 24:, the purpose of which will be more fully hereinafter described. Also secured within the guideways l8 and 19 adjacent the bottom wall of the.
body 'is a match scratching plate 25.
The cover 11 is provided adjacent one end thereof with an opening 25 and the said cover is also formed at opposite sides of the opening with longitudinally extending parallel guideways 2G and 27 within which is slidably mounted a slide plate 29 for controlling the opening 25. This slide plate is provided at its opposite ends with spaced upstanding fingers 30 and 31 which-faeilitate the movement thereof.
For the purpose of securing the cover 11 in closed position and the slide plate 21 over the opening 20, there is riveted or otherwise secured to the front wall 13 of the body immediately above the opening 20, a fastener 32 provided at its upper and lower ends with spring fingers 33 and 34, the upper finger 33 adapted to snap over the lip 35 formed on the cover 11 While the lower finger 34 is adapted to snap over the lug 24 on the plate 21. In order that the container may be secured within the pocket of the wearer or may be attached to a belt or the like, there is secured to the rear wall 14 of the body a spring arm 36.
In the use of the improved container, and when the same is fastened in the pocket or attached to the belt, the cigar or ci arette ashes can be readily deposited t erein through the opening 25 by simply moving the slide plate 29 so as to uncover the same. When the container is being thus carried, it will be readily appreciated that the opening 20 will be closed by the plate 21, said plate being retained in closed position by means of the finger 34.
When the container is not being carried in the pocket and when it is desired to place the same on a table or the like, it is so ositioncd that the ashes may be deposited t erein through the opening 20 and when so placed, the opening 25 will of course be.
closed by the slide plate 29 to prevent the spilling of the ashes. When it is desired to remove the ashes from the container, the cover 11 is simply swung open. When the container is in a vertical position, the fingers 30 and 31 serve to retain in position any cigarette or cigar which may be rested upon the-cover 11 while the fingers 22 and 23 serve the same purpose when the container is lying flat upon a table or the like.
From the foregoing, it is believed that the construction and use of the present invention will be readily apparent and it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from or sacrificing the spirit of the invention so long as such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A container of the class described including a body having an opening in one wall thereof. and being further provided with longitudinally extending guideways at opposite sides of the opening, a slide plate mounted within said guideways for controllin the said opening, a cover hinged to the 'b0 y having an opening therein and being further provided with guideways at opposite sides of the opening, a slide plate mounted within the last named guideways for controlling the opening in the cover, and a fastener carried by the body for retaining the cover in closed position and for also retaining the first named slide plate over the opening in the body.
2. An ash receiver of the character described, comprising a rece tacle having one end open, a cover for sai receptacle comprisin a plate having two parallel edges turne inwardly in spaced relation to the plate body to provide inwardly opening side grooves and folded back upon themselves across the edges of the plate at right angles to the underface thereof to provide retaining flanges designed to frictionally eng e over opposite side walls of the receptac e, the other edges of said plate being turned downwardly to provide flanges for the engagement of the other side walls of the receptacle, said plate being provided with an aperture between said grooves, and a sliding door member arranged with opposite side edges in said grooves, for sliding movement across the plate to control said 0 ening.
3. In an ash receiver 0 the'character described, a pair of seams formed longitudinally of one side wall, in spaced parallel relation and of substantially S shaped cross sectional design, setting up a longitudinally extending panel, a portion of each seam being formed to provide a guide groove opening toward the opposite seam, said panel having an o ening formed therein, a door plate arrange over the outer face of said panel and having opposite edges thereof slidably engaged in said grooves, and means for maintaining said door plate in position over said opening.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
