Description

Nov. 8, 1949 c. L. HARRIS 2,487,131
COMBINATION ASH AND CIGARETTE- RECEPTACLE Filed Dec. 51, 1947 Fig. 4.
Patented Nov. 8, 1949 UNITED if l This invention 'relates 'tonew' and'usefulirn provementsl in cigarette containers and'.th'ef-pri mary object of the*"presentv invention isto fprorette receptacle including an ash receiving'-4tiomA` partment having av receiving opening. and embodying novel 'and' improvedmeans for conducting ashesy from the openingtnthe bottomfotithe ash receiving compartment, .in'such a mai-*meras to .reduce the normaldustxprevalent when? the ashes engagentheY bottomwallt'offthe comparte ment..
A further object of the present invention is to provide a combination ash and cigarette receptacle that includes an ash receiving compartment, a cigarette receiving compartment, and novel and improved slidable closure means for removing ashes from .the ash compartment.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a combination ash and cigarette receptacle that is simple and practical in construction, small and compact in structure, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for Which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combination ash and cigarette receptacle constructed in accordance with the present invention, and with parts thereof broken away and shown in sections;
Figure 2 is a transverse horizon-tal sectional view of the present receptacle taken substantially on the plane of section line 2 2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the present receptacle taken substantially on the plane of section line 3 3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional View of the present receptacle taken substantially on the plane of section line 4 4 of Figure 1; and,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the present receptacle and showing in dotted lines the ash receiving compartment slidable closure in an open position.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is dis- ,2f closed' apreferred Iembodiment^ `ofthe vmesen't' invention, the numeral it represents ar` subs-tan; tialiy rectanguiar case '-gener'aily; having 'spaced parallel side walls I2, `spacediaralll7endwalls Iliana 16;' 'and abottmn wallltll The l"pper edges'of 'thefwalls I'Z'and lill-are' provided th' reduced, upstanding iianges Mithatfrictionally engage-'notches orrgrooves ltilprovidd in thesend wail Miami/side 'Walls -J3'8"?of?a'fjciosure33t which includes ai frtherend-Walll 34 that is hinged 2 as at .365 to fthe end ifi/*alli` 142. tofthe vel ure 32, is a substantially L-shaped springira'nrl i having an arcuated endiportion'y Aoltiratrfnctionally-"engages 'a1'pr'o'tuberai'icel 42f`provided'on the endweiii' It', .for hcldilng'the closure' `3121 'in ahora mally closed position relative to the case I0.
FiXedly secured to opposing inner faces of the side walls I2, and spaced relative to the end wall I4, is a substantially rectangular partition -44 that divides the case I0 in a cigarette receiving compartment 46 and an ash receiving compartment 48. The upper end of the ash receiving compartment -48 is closed by a rigid closure plate 50 that will prevent ashes deposited Within the ash receiving compartment 48 from entering the cigarette receiving compartment 46, to harmfully effect cigarettes placed in the latter of said compartments.
In order to facilitate the placement of cigarette ashes in the ash receiving compartment 48, there is provided 'a substantially rectangular opening 52 in one of the side walls I2 of the case IIJ that communicates with the compartment 48.
The bottom 20 of the case I0 is provided with a discharge opening 54 that communicates with the ash receiving compartment 48 and this opening 54 is provided with longitudinal guide grooves 56 Ithat slidably engage the reduced longitudinal side edges 58 of a removable closure 60, the outer face of Which is coplanar with the face of the bottom wall 20. The closure 60 is provided with a finger engaging notch 62 in its outer face, and a protuberance or stop 64 on its inner face that frictionally engages the inner face of the end Wall I4, for normally locking the closure in a closed position relative to the opening 54.
Rigidly secured to the inner face of one of the side walls I2, are the hanged portions 66 and 68 of an upper bailie plate 10 and a lower baille plate I2 that incline downwardly and are spaced relative to the other side wall of the case I0 to which there is secured the flange portion 'I4 of an intermediate downwardly inclined bale plate 'I6 which inclines downwardly toward and is spaced from the lower baille plate 12.
In practical use of the device, when the ashes are deposited in the opening 52, the same will engage the upper baille plate 10, slide downwardly on the upper baflle plate l to engage the intermediate baiile plate 16, slide downwardly on the baille plate 16 to engage the lower bale plate 12 and hence'the ashes will pass into the lower portion of the compartment 48 where they may be removed by opening the closure 60.
Obviously, by using the bai-lle plates to reduce the normal gravitational descent of the ashes the compartment 48, the amount of dust emitted from the compartment 48 will be retained at a minimum. Also, the baffle platesy will prevent the ashes from passing from the compartment 48 outwardly through the opening 52.
In View of the foregoing description takenA in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding `of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
- It is to be uderstood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
f Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A combination ash and cigarette receptacle comprising a case having a bottom Walland a hinged upper wall, a partition fixed insaid case '4 and dividing the same into an ash compartment and a cigarette compartment, a closure plate closing the upper end of said ash compartment, an ash receiving opening provided in said case adjacent said upper wall and communicating with the ash compartment, a plurality of inclined baille plates mounted in said ash compartment arranged to prevent ashes from passing outwardly through the ash receiving opening, and including spaced parallel upper and lower bafes and an intermediate baille, said intermediate baille being inclined in an opposite direction than said upper and lower baffles, an opening provided in the bottom wall of said case having side edges, grooves provided in the side edges of said last-mentioned opening, a closure having side edges slidably received in said grooves, and means carried by and locking last-mentioned closure in a closed position.
