CLOTHES HANGER.

My invention 'is concerned with clothes han 'ers, and is designed primarily to produce a simple device, designed more especially for ladies dresses, that will be capable of supporting the same in the customary manner, and which in addition will hold them from sidewise shifting on the hanger, or from falling off of it.

To this end it consists essentially of a transverse bar and supporting means, such as are customarily employed, with a downwardly extending pair of clamping jaws supported directly from the center of the transverse bar and adapted to grip a dress where it is otherwise unsupported, and prevent its lateral movement on the hanger bar.

More specifically it consists of such a bar combined with a supporting hook and clamping jaws all formed from wire, preferably from a single piece.

To illustrate my invention, I annex hereto a sheet of drawings in which the same reference characters are used to designate identical parts in all the figures, of which Fig. l is a view of the central portion of a hanger employmg my invention seen 1n side cievation;

Fig. 2 is a view on the same scale seen as in section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and V Fig. 3 is an elevation of the complete hanger with the garment suspended thereon, on a much smaller scale.

The transverse bar a is preferably constructed of wood, curved, as shown, and the hook is preferably formed from a single piece of wire having the two twisted portions 5 passed through the aperture 0 formed in the bar a, and supporting said bar by reason of the bends (Z formed therein. The hook portion proper e constitutes the upper portion, and it will be understood that various other arrangements might be employed by which the bar is supported from the hook.

In the preferred form of my invention,

the wire or wires are extended below the bends (Z and have the straight portions f and f/ preferably diverging as shown, and terminating in the loops k and 2', which in the use of the device form cooperating clamping jaws. A ring or link j having its greatest internal diameter less than the natural distance between the parts 7' and g is mounted thereon so that when it is shoved down from the position shown in Fig. 2, the adjacent side of the loop it will be brought into the loop 2', and grip the adjacent portion of the dress is, which will be placed between the loops, as seen in Fig. 3, and thus hold the dress from possible lateral displacement on, or from falling off of the bar a.

While I have shown and described my invention as embodied in the form which I at present consider best adapted to carry out its purposes, it is to be understood that it is capable of modifications, and that I do not desire to be limited in the interpretation of the following claims except as may be necessitated by the state of the prior art.

\Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. In adevice of the class described, the combination with a transverse bar having an aperture through the center thereof, of a pair of wires passed through the aperture and shaped so as to be held from movement relative thereto, their upper ends being shaped to form a suspension hook while their lower ends form clamping jaws adapted to clamp and hold a garment directly between them without the aid of any other element.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a transverse bar having 35 an aperture through the center of the same, of a pair of wires passed through the aperture, their upper ends being shaped. to form a suspension hook, their portions directly beneath the bar being bent horizontally to support the same, and the portions below the bend diverging at a small angle and terminating in loops adapted to clamp and hold a garment directly between them.without the aid of any other element, and a link 5 cooperating with said diverging portions for the purpose described.

3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a transverse bar and sup porting means therefor, of a pair of clamping jaws depending from the center of the bar, said jaws consisting of a pair of normally diverging wires terminating in opposed separate loops of the same size and adapted to clamp and hold a garn'ient directly between them without the aid of any other element, and a link adapted to slide downward thereon to bring the loops together for the purpose described, one of said loops directed at right angles to the other 10 so that it can partially enter said other loop. 7 In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of March, 1926.
