Application filed August-5.10, 1925. Serial 11'0. 49,262.
This invention relates to a furniture drawer pull, andhas for an objectto provide a pull in which the face plate portion-may be formed of thin sheet metal. havingsharply defined embossed ornamentation, and which i will at the same time be of relatively strong construction and capable of being economically manufactured.
his the practice in the production of fur niture to provide the drawer pull holes in central relation in the front panel of the drawer, so that'a pull having a non-centralizedpostniust beattached-in such manner that it is below the center of the drawer, or
else another hole must be drilled. f It is highly desirable therefore thatthe pull have a cent ill post. Heretofore, especially with a sheet metal face plate, the post was passed through the plate from "the front and was provided with a bail attaching clip or loop, the post,
ob viously, being non-central where the bale clip wasnon-ccntral. In cast metal pulls the aligned postand hail loop were cast integral.
with the face plate, but in such cast constructions it was not possible to. obtain such ,delie.
cate and well defined ornamentation as is possible in sheet metal.
It is therefore proposed to provide inth'e present invention a pull including a sheet metal'face plate mounted'upon a rigid rein-' forcing element, and to; which latter element the central post is secured independently of the face plate; and further to provide a noncentralized bail loop secured to the rein forcin element' in such manner that )ullin D D strains exerted thereon will not bend or distort the face plate.
With the above and an embodiment of the lIlY filltlOll'lS shown in the accompanying drawmgs, and this embodiment will be hereinafter more fully describedwith reference thereto, and the invention will be finally pointed outin the claims.

Fig. 8 is a plan view of the reinforcing plate element employed;

F 1g. 81s a sect1onal view showing the assembled face plate and reinforcing element;
Fig. .9 is a similar'view showing the same pierced to receive the ball loop and position 11X1I1g. tack; and
Fig. 10 is sectional view of the completely assembled pull. r Sinnlar reference"characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several fig- 11 res of the drawings.
Referring-to the drawings, the drawer pull, according to the present embodiment of the invention, includes a face plate lOforined of sheet mctal, preferably tli'in she'et brass,
and having a per-ipheral'fiange 11. The sur- 7 face ofthis plate provided with embossed ornamentation, the, thinsheet inetal lending itself to the productionof closely patterned,
sharply defined ornamental configurations, and :1 ncludes an annular'bail receiving depressi'on 12 inwardly spaced from theperiphery, and a pressed out center portion 13 providing a central'concavity at the inner side of. the
plate. WVh'ile the plate is illustrated as circular,- it may be of any desired shape, as octago-i nal, in which case the reinforcing element, presently to-be described, will be of corresponding' shape; i i
The reinforcing elementlt is in the form ofva relatively-thick stiff sheet metal plate,
preferably sheet steel or brass, provided'centrally with an aperture 15 including radial notches 16 and 17, and within whi'chfthere is inserted the post 18,- headed as at. l9,and prQ-f vided with integral lug portionsQO. and-21 adapted to bie'engaged in the notches lo-and 17 and pefenediover, as clearly indicated in Fig. 8, to' thereby secure the post n'on-rotzltably to the reinforcing ele1nent'. The head 19 is disposed at the forward sideof the element i 1 let, and the rearwardly projecting post is pro vided with a threadedscrew receiving socket Thereinforcing plate element is engaged witlithe faceplate 10 at its inner side and, as shown in Fig. 8, the peripheral flange 11-. being'bent over onthe elementto thereby se- V with a series of notches 23into which the i V curely mount said face plate, the periphery of the element being preferably provided bent over flange is pressed to thereby prevent relative turning of the plate. 7
In such attached relation of the plate to the reinforcing element the annular bail re ceiving depression snugly engages the inner surface of the element, and thepressed out center-portion 13 receives the head 19 of the post and is supported thereby against dent ing. The assembled plate and'reinforcing member are now pierced to provide, spaced parallel slots 24 andv 25 within the depression 12 at the top and a hole 26 at the bottom, the
latter adapted to receive a position fixing tack 27,'as shown in Fig. 2.,
The bail or handle 28, provided with'shoulvdered bearing ends'29, is pivotally mounted within-the depression 12 by means of a U-shaped clip or loop member 80 engaged over said bearing ends and shouldered, as at r 31, to provide projecting ears 32, which are against turning.
The pull, according to my inventiomniay be forn'ied of thinsheet metal in which delicate'and sharply defined designs may be ef- 'fectually produced by embossing, and at the same time 'thestructure is of such strengtlifi tially solid rigid structure, an attaching post I that excessivepull upon the off-center bail I attaching clip is transmitted to the cen'ter post withoutdanger ofdistortion of the face plate or loosening the parts. provides a reliably functioning sheet metal pull lending itself to the production of attractive designs, and one whlch maybe economically manufactured by eflicient methods. I have illustrated and described a preferred and satisfactory embodiment of the invention,
' but it will be obvious that changes may be made therein, within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.-
Having thus described my invention, what Ifclaim and desire togsecure by Letters Pat- 1. Ina drawer pull, a sheet metal face plate having an annular bail receiving recess pressed therein and havinga continuous peripheral flange, a reinforcing plate secured thereto at the inner side bysaid peripheral flange, and contacting and supporting said annularrecess, attaching means secured to said reinforcing plate and projected-reap I the pull The invention 7 wardly therefrom, a bail disposed in saidrecess, and bearing means for said bail disposed in said recess and secured to said reinforcing plate.
2. In a drawer pull, a face plate of relatively thin sheet metal having an iinperforate Ctntral portion, a rigid reinforcing plate of relativcly thick metal securedthereto at the. inner side and whereby the assembled plates constitute a substantially solid rigid struc-c "'ture, an attaching post secured centrally to sa d reinforcing plate and PIOJGC'CQCl rearwardly therefrom, a handle,.and non-centrally disposed bearing means for said handle se-' cured to s aid reinforcing plate at a point betweenjtheperiphery of said plate and to said post. v 1 in a drawer pull, a face plate of relatively thinsheet metal having an imperfOratecen tral portion dished at its inner side, a rigid centrally apertured reinforcing plate of rela tively thick metal secured thereto at the inner side and whereby the assembled plates consti tntea snhstantially solid rigid structure, av headed attaching post engaged in said aperf ture, said head being disposed at one side of said reinforcing plate within said dished portion of the faceplate and contacting and supporting said dished portion against distor-. rion,- and said post projecting at" the other side a handle, and bearing means for said handle secured to said reinforcingplate in non-central and offset relation to said post. 4:. In a c lra-wer pull,-a face plate having an imperforatecentral portion, a backing plate secured thereto-at theinner'side zindwhre- ,by -theassembled plates constitute asubstanat. the inner side and whereby the assembled plates constitute a substantially solid rigid structure a headed attachingpost engaged in said aperture, said head beingdisposed at one side of said backingplatebeneath and concealed by said face plate, and said post projecting at the other side, a handle, and
bearing means for "said handle secured to said backing plate in non-central and offset relation to said post. i I 'Y Signed at Bridgeport, 'in the-county of Fairfield, and $tate of Connecticut,this 3rd" day of August, 1925.;
