In tack-fastened buttons it is customary to make the part comprising the recessed back and hub of relatively heavy gage metal so that it will withstand the pressure applied to it in the operation of setting or attaching the button to an article, the recess in the back providing a space to receive an anvil of relatively heavy metal held in place in the back by a top or cap of thin metal which provides a linish for the button head. f
By providing buttons with the combined iiller and anvil contemplated by this invention, as hereinafter described, it is possible to make the button back and hub of much lighter gage metal than has heretofore been practicable.
The invention consists in a combined iiller and anvil for tack-fastened buttons, comprising a blank so formed as to provide a filler having an anvil portion and arms offstanding therefrom, the filler and anvil portion adopted to be arranged in the recessed back `of a button and held in place relatively thereto by the button top orcap, and the arms so arranged as to extend into the button hub to provide means for guiding an attaching tack` into upsetting relation to the anvil and to hold the button fastened when the tack is upset or clinched, as will be hereinafter more fully explained and finally claimed.

Figs. 14 and 15 illustrate the manner in which the button is attached or fascated at a to provide three filler portions 5,
of substantially sector shape, and three arms 6 oifstanding substantially normal to the blank and having their free ends 7 formed or bent inwardly into close proximity for a purpose hereinafter appearing. The portion 8 of the blank lying intermediate the filler portions 5 and arms 6 provides an anvil.
It will be noted, by reference to Figs. 7, 14 and 15, that the thickness of the blank and Vhence of the filler portions 5 and anvil portion 8 thereof is such as to snugly fit between the .back 1 and top 3 of the button, and that the Varms 6 are of such a length and so formed as to closely fit within the hub 2. Thus when pressure is applied to the button, as is the case during the setting operation, neither the back, ytop nor hub of the button will be injured, distorted or marred, but all `will be supported and rigidly strengthened by the combined filler and anvil.
In attaching the button to an article or material, the button is placedupon one side of the material 9, see Fig. 111, and then a tack 10 .is driven through the material and its `point 11 passes through the hole 12 in the bottom of the hub 2 and is guided by the .portions 7 of the arms 6 into engagement with the anvil 8 against which it ,is upset or clinched, as shown in Fig. 15, substantially lling the space or chamber formed within the hub 2 by the arms, and bearing against the anvil 8 and the inturned portions 7 of the arms 6. Thus the button is rigidly fastened upon the material.
The forms of the invention shown by the modifications illustrated in Figs. 8, 9 and 10 and 11, 12 and 13, respectively, differ in form but not in function from that just described.
In Figs. 8, 9 and 10 the device is shown as having four filler portions 5a and four arms 6a, and in Figs. 11, 12 and 13 it is shown as having two fi ler portions 5b and two arms 6b.
In all of the forms of the device illustrated it will be seen that the inturned free ends of the arms 6, 6a and 6b are so shaped and associated as to produce a definite opening for guiding the point of the tack and a well defined abutment against which the point of the tack, when upset or clinched, may bear.
As hereinbefore pointed out, it is apparent that, due to the fact that the combined filler and anvil takes the strain of the setting operation, it is possible to make the button back, hub and top much lighter gage stock than has heretofore been practicable. Moreover, as distinguished from those buttons wherein a hub filler is used in addition to the anvil plate, the device of the invention simplifies the assembling operation in that it combines in a unitary element the part which provides a filler and anvil arranged between the back and top and the filler for the hub. Therefore, by the employment of the device of the invention, not only are the structural arts of the button cheapened and simpli ed, but the assembly thereof is facilitated as well.
Various changes and modifications including and in addition to those shown and described are considered to be within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the following claims.
What I claim is 1. A combined filler and anvil for tackfastened buttons, comprising in a unitary structure a filler member adapted for interposition between the back and top of a button and including an anvil portion, and arms ostanding from same and confined within the button hub, said arms providing guides for an attaching tack.
2. A combined filler and anvil for tackfastened buttons, comprising in a unitary structure a filler member adapted for interposition between the back and top of a button and including an anvil portion, and arms partially severed from said filler member andloil'standing from same and confined within the button hub, said arms having free ends bent into relatively close proximity and providmg guides for an attaching tack.
4. A combined filler and anvil for tackfastened buttons, comprising a unitary blank cut and formed to provide a filler adapted for intel-position between the back and top of a button and having an anvil portion, and arms offstanding therefrom and providing means for Tuiding a tack into clinching relation to said anvil portion.
5. A combined filler and anvil for tackfastened buttons, comprising a unitary blank cut and formed to provide a filler adapted for interposition between the back and top of a button and having an anvil portion, and arms offstanding therefrom and having free ends bent into relatively close proximity to guide an attaching tack into setting relation to said anvil portion and to provide a stop for engagement with the upset portion of the tack to fasten the button.

A combined filler and anvil for tackfastened buttons, comprising a unitary blank slitted to provide a plurality of arms and intermediate substantially sector-shaped filler members, said ller members adapted for intel-position between the top and back of a button, the center portion of said blank serving as an anvil, and said arms bent into offstandin relation to said blank to provide means tor guiding a tack into upsetting relation to the anvil and for engaging the tack when upset. l
7. Ina tack-fastened button having a back, a hub and a top, a combined filler and anvil having a filler portion arranged between the back and top and adapted to relatively support' same, and arms olstanding from said filler 1portion and confined within said hub.

A combined filler and anvil for tackfastened buttons, comprising in a unitary structure a filler member adapted to be arranged between the back and top of a button and provided with three ofstanding arms serving as tack guides, the portion of the filler member lying between said arms serving as a tack anvil.
10. A combined filler and anvil for tackfastened buttons, comprising a blank slitted to provide three substantially radially extending ller members adapted to be arranged between the back and top of a button, and three intermediate arms, said arms bent substantially normal to said blank and providing means for guiding an attaching tack,
and the portion of said blank lying intermediate said arms providing an anvil.
11. A combined ller and anvil for taekastened buttons, comprising a blank having iiller portions adapted for interposition between the back and top of a button, and a. pair of oppositely disposed ofstanding arms, the portion of said blank lying between said arms serving as an anvil, and said arms providing a guide for an attaching tack.

A combined ller and anvil for tackastened buttons, comprising a blank having ller portions adapted for interposition between the back and top of a button, and a pair of oppositely disposed oiistanding arms, the portion of said blank lying between said arms serving as an anvil, and said arms formed to provide a guide for an attaching tack and to engage said tack when upset by said anvil.
