Application January 17, 1939, Serial No. 251,342 1 claim. (c1. 16-126) This invention relates to a handle for mattresses, boX springs, studio couches and similar articles; and has for its object to provide a handle structure which may be attached to the before mentioned articles in a strong and eiective manner, thereby making it possible to lift and move said articles as may be necessary by means of said handles without danger of tearing the material of the articles to which the handles are attached.
The invention consists of a-handle for mattresses and similar articles as set forth in the following specication and particularly as pointed out in the claim.

In they drawing, A represents an edge portion of a mattress or the like, including a covering material a and a padding material b, both Well known in the art, and commonly provided atthe edge portionl of inner spring and other types of mattresses to which the handles of this invention are attached. 'Ihe handle assembly comprises a back plate 5, front plate 6, fastening members 'I whereby said plates are clamped together and to the mattress, and a handle 8 loosely mounted in said fastening members. back plate has two gripping areas- 9 embodied The therein and formed by pressing radially disposed corrugations I0 therein; and slots II are provided at the center of said areas 9 to receive the fastening members l. 'I'he `front plates G are formed as circular discs having radially dis- 3 posed corrugations` I2 and a slot I3 formed therein and adapted to align With the corrugations I0 and slot II respectively of the back plate 5. The fastening members 1 are formed as split pins, having a bearing or socket portion 10 I4 embodied therein in which the handle 8. is loosely mounted to swing as may be desired in handling the mattress, and two legs I5 which are inserted through the slots I3 and II of the plates 6 and l5 respectively, and through the 15 materials a and b of the mattress A, said legs I5 nally being clinched against the rear surface of the back plate 5 as illustrated in Fig. 3.
In securing the handles of this invention to a mattress or like article, the material of the mattress is clamped between the `co-operating gripping surfaces of the plates 5 and Ii, and the radial corrugations of said plates act to prevent a relative movement between said plates andl material in all directions. The unitary back plate 5 for the two front plates 6 acts to space said front plates a predetermined distance apart and stiiens and strengthens the entire handle structure.

A handle for mattresses and the' like comprising, in combination, a back platehaving radially disposed corrugations thereon, front plates having radially disposed corrugations adapted to align with corrugations of said Lback plate, 35 fastening members projecting through said front and back plates and causing the material of a mattress to be clamped between their respective corrugations, and a handle mounted in said fastening members.
