Description
Dec. 13, 1938. E, CAVICCHI MATTRESS VENTILATOR Filed March 8, 1957 Patented Dec. 13, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to ventilators and more particularly to a ventilator particularly designed for use on mattresses, pillows, upholstery and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a mattress ventilator of simple and inexpensive construction capable of being quickly and securely attached to any portion of a mattress whereby to permit the free circulation of air through the body of the mattress and consequently increase the effective life thereof and render the mattress thoroughly sanitary under all conditions of service.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mattressventilator which may be used either with or without a retaining ring for clamping the ventilator in position on a mattress ticking, the
parts being so constructed as to insure a firm positive grip on the cloth without danger of tearing, ripping or otherwise damaging the fabric around said ventilator.
A further object is to provide a ventilator including a flat disk-like body portion having ventilating slots punched or otherwise formed therein, with the metal between the walls of the slots bent outwardly to form radial clamping tongues for direct engagement with the cloth or for cooperation with a suitable retaining ring.
A further object is to provide a mattress ventilator, the body of which is formed with stepped ribs disposed between the ventilating slots and which ribs not only serve to reinforce and strengthen said body but also impart a distinctive ornamental appearance to the ventilator.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efiiciency.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a mattress equipped with a ventilator embodying the present invention,
Figure 2 is an enlarged front elevation,
Figure 3 is a rear or inside view,
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 2 showing the construction of the stepped reinforcing ribs,
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional View showing the retaining ring omitted and the clamping 55 tongues in direct contact with the cloth,
Figure '7 is a plan view illustrating a modified form of the invention, and
Figure 8 is a similar view illustrating another form of the invention.
The improved ventilator forming the subjectmatter of the present invention may be used on mattresses, pillows and upholstery of all kinds, and byway of illustration is shown applied to a conventional type of mattress in which 5 designates the top of the mattress and B one of the side or end walls thereof.
The device comprises a disk-like plate or body portion 1 preferably stamped or otherwise formed from sheet vmetal and which may be circular in outline, as shown, said body portion being of su fii- Cut, punched or otherwise formed in thebody portion ,7 are a series of converging incisions ,9 arranged in pairs with one of the incisions of each pair intersecting the other near the center of the body portion, the metal between each pair of incisions being-bent to extend from the inner face of the body and form tapered clamping 'spurs or tongues Ill and provide substantially V- shaped ventilating openings H through the body or plate I. The body portion is also preferably formed with a central ventilating opening I2 while the marginal edge of said body is preferably scalloped or otherwise ornamented, at 13, to give the ventilator a neat attractive appearance. Associated with the disk-like body portion 1 is a flat retaining or clamping ring I4 which coacts with the inner surface of the body 5 to clamp the fabric 8' therebetween, this clamping action being efiected by pressing or bending the tongues I0 into position to extend radially across the retaining ring, as best shown in Figure 4 of the drawing. When the tongues I0 are clamped in engagement with the retaining ring l4, the inner faces of said tongues will be disposed parallel to the plane of the ring so that liability of the terminals of the tongues cutting or tearing the mattress ticking is positively prevented. The bending of the tongues form inner shoulders M which bear against the inner marginal edge of the clamping ring and the adjacent fabric and materially assist in holding the ventilators in position on the mattress.
' Between the ventilating openings H, the metal constituting the body I of the ventilator is embossed or pressed outwardly to form a series of radiating ribs l5 the side portions of which are stepped or offset with respect to their central portions, as indicated at it and which ribs not only serve to reinforce and strengthen the body portion I but also enhance the ornamental appearance of the ventilator as a whole.
Any desired number of ventilators may be used and positioned at any desired place or places on the mattress in order to permit the free circulation of air therethrough.
In applying the. ventilator to a mattress, the opening 8 is first formed in the cloth or ticking after which the body portion 7 is positioned against the outside of the mattress with the tongues passing through the opening. and the clamping ring bearing against the inner face cloth opposite the marginal portion of the body; after which the tongues H] are bent into position to extend across the retaining ring I4 with the shoulders I4 in contact with the fabric and ring, respectively, thereby securely clamping the. ventilator in position on the ticking, as will be readily understood.
If desired, however, the retaining or clamping ring 14 may be dispensed with, and in Figure 6 of the drawing I have shown a ventilator in which the cloth is clamped directly between the body portion ll of the ventilator and the tongues IS, the construction and operation of the device being otherwise similar to that shown in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive of the drawing. Instead of making the disk-like body portion of the ventilator circular inoutline, said body portion may be substantially rectangular in shape, as indicated at [9 in Figure '7 of the drawing, or if desired, it may be of diamond formation, as indicated at 2B in Figure 8. In fact, any desired shape may be imparted to the body of the ventilator and said ventilator may be made in any distinctive design so long as the body portion of the ventilator is provided with the ventilating openings and clamping tongues previously referred to.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A mattress ventilator comprising a body formed with slits spaced from each other, the
material enclosed by the slits being bent to form clamping tongues and provide spaced apart ventilating openings through the body.
2. A mattress ventilator comprising a disk-like metallic body portion having slits formed therein, the metal enclosed by the slits being bent to provide ventilating openings through the body and form clamping tongues extending from the inner face of the body at outer ends of the openings, said tongues when in a clamped position having portions extending substantially parallel to the body across the outer marginal portion thereof.
3. A mattress ventilator comprisinga body portion having spaced substantially V-shaped incisions formed therein with arms of each incision converging inwardly and intersecting at their innerends, and the metal between the arms of the incisions being bent to provide radially extending ventilating openings through the body and form clamping tongues extending from the inner face of the body at outer ends of the openings, the attached ends 'of said tongues being provided with abutment shoulders adapted to engage the cloth of the mattress and the free ends ofsaid tongues being adapted to clamp the cloth against the outer peripheral portion of the body, the material between adjacent ventilating openings being embossed to form outwardly projecting radiating ribs having portions disposed in stepped relation to each other.
4. A mattress ventilator comprising a body portion of a size adapting it to fit over an opening in' a mattress ticking and bear against the outer face of the ticking about the opening, a clamping ring for bearing against the inner face of the ticking opposite the ma'rginal'edge portion of the body, said body being formed with spaced slots constituting radially extending ventilating openings, and tongues extending from the inner face of the body at outer ends of said openings and having their free end portions bent to extend across said clamping ring and cause the ticking to be clamped between the ring and marginal portions of the body.
