WRENCH.
Application filed March 19, 1927. Serial No. 176,728.
The present invention is directed to improvements in wrenches.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character constructed in such manner that pipes of various diameters can be quickly and firmly gripped and rotated into or out of threaded engagement with very little effort upon the part of the operator.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench having its jaws so constructed that they will not only firmly grip pipes or rods, but can also be used for manipulating nuts of various sizes.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench.
Figure 2 is an edge view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a handle having a plurality of grouped openings 2 formed therein and to the outer end of which is connected the jaw 3 which consists of arcuate plates 4 and between which the outer end of the handle 1 is pivotally connected by the bolt 6. The j aw 8 is of arcuate formation and consists of a pair of plates 9, there being a block 10 located between the forward ends thereof, said block having a serrated edge 11, said plates having their inner ends terminating in shanks 12. The plates of the `jaw 8 are pivotally connected upon opposite sides of the plates 4 of the j aw 3 by a bolt 13.
A pair of link plates 14 are provided and are of arcuate formation and have their inner ends pivotally connected upon opposite sides of the handle 1 by a bolt 15, the bolt being adapted to be placed in a selected opening 2 in order to regulate the movement of the respective jaws.
The forward ends of the link plates 14 are pivotally connected between the rear ends of the` shanks 12 by a bolt 16. The plates 4 of the jaw 3 are further provided with perfol rations 19 in order that the bolt 6 may be engaged therein to obtain further adjustment of the wrench, when desired.
It will beobserved that the plates of the Jaws 3 have flat edges 17 in order that the wrench can be used in connection with nuts of various sizes.
In use, the jaws 3 and 8 are placed upon the pipe 18, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing, and upon rocking the handle 1 downwardly thel pipe will be firmly gripped. This downward movement of the handle will draw the link plates 14 rearwardly and also the shank 12, and at the same time moving the handle forwardly to cause the jaw 3 to approach the outer end of the jaw 8 and block 10. Upon moving 'the handle in a reverse direction will cause the aw to spread in order that a pipe can be gripped intermittently.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
A wrench comprising a handle having longitudinally spaced openings formed therein, an arcuate jaw pivoted near one of its ends to the forward end of said handle and eX- tending from one side thereof and having teeth adjacent its pivoted end, a second arcuate jaw pivoted to the outer end of the first jaw in straddling relation thereto having teeth opposed to the teeth of the first jaw and having a shank extending rearwardly the/refrom in transversely spaced relation to said handle, a link pivoted to the rear end of the shank of the second jaw and extending towards said handle with its inner end portion extending longitudinally of the handle, and a removable fastener passed through the inner end portion of said link and through a selected opening in the handle to secure the link in a set position against a side of the handle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
