UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ALVA W. WOODWARD AND MAX 0. KUI'IN, OF AKRON, OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THE FIRE- STONE STEEL PRODUCTS COMPANY, OF AKRON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
DIE on PUNCH MOUNTING.
Application filed July 28, 1925.
This invention relates to mountings for dies or punches in punch presses whereby the die and punch will be relatively adjustable into proper relation to the work and to each other.
The chief object of the invention is to provide an improved mounting for either dies or punches permitting universal adjustment thereof within certain limits on the platens of the press.
The foregoing and other objects are obtained in the rim press illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described below. It is to be understood that the invention is l5 capable of use in punch presses generally and is not limited to the press here described.
Of the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of a press embodying the invention:
' Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section therethrough on line 22 of Figure 3; and
Figure 3 is a plan thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 10 represents a conventional lower platen and 11 a conventional upper platen of a rim punching press.
Secured on the platen-1O is a die block 12 seated in a longitudinal groove 13 formed in the surface of the platen. The walls 14, 14
of the groove are inclined outwardly and the longitudinal edges 15, 15 of block 12 are inclined inwardly. For securing the block in place, wedge bars 16, 16 are provided and are arranged between the adjacent walls 14 and edges 15, screws 17, 17 extending through the bars and threaded into the platen 10, being provided to wedge block 12 into determinate positions in groove 13. By the arrangement described, the block 12 may be moved in groove 13 longitudinally to any desired longitudinal position and it may be adjusted transversely of groove 13 by relative adjustment of wedge bars 16 as will be clearly understood.
A similar mounting to that described above may be used for securing a punch in place. In the illustration, however, the platen 11 has formed therein a groove 18 in which a punch block 18 is secured by a wedge bar 19 cooperating with an inclined wall 20 of Serial No. 46,575.
groove 18 and an oppositely or reversely inclined edge 21 on block 18 bar 19 being actuated by screws 22, 22. Thus block 18 is longitudinally adjustable in a similar manner to block 12 but is not transversely adjustable, the relative adjustment of block 12 transversely with respect to block 18 being usually sufficient to properly align the punches and dies.
It will appear from the foregoing that a simple but effective mounting for dies or punches has been provided. Modifications of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
\Vh at is claimed is:
1. A mounting for a die or punch compris ing a platen formed with a longitudinal groove having inclined side walls, a block seated in the groove formed with reversely inclined longitudinal edges, said block being movable transversely and longitudinally in said groove, wedge bars adapted to fit between adjacent side walls and edges, and means for urging each wedge bar inwardly of the groove.
2. A mounting for a die or punch comprising a platen formed with a longitudinal groove having inclined side walls, a block seated in the groove formed with reversely inclined longitudinal edges, wedge bars adapted to fit between adjacent side walls. and means for urging each wedge bar inwardly of the groove.
3. A mounting for a die or punch comprising a platen formed with a longitudinal groove having inclined side walls, a block seated in the groove formed with reversely inclined longitudinal edges, said block being movable transversely and longitudinally in said groove, wedge bars adapted to fit between adjacent side walls and edges, each wedge bar being provided with one inclined wedge face cooperating with an inclined side wall of the groove and another inclined wedge face cooperating with a reversely'inclined longitudinal edge of the block, and means for urging each wedge bar inwardly of the groove, whereby inward movement of one Wedge bar and outward movement of the other wedge bar will cause a transverse adjustment of said block.
4. In a punch press the combination of platen members relatively movable toward and from each other, a punch block mounted on one platen, a die block mounted on the other platen, one of said blocks being mounted in a groove in its supporting platen, and means for permitting longitudinal and transverse adjustment of the latter block, comprising a pair of bars each having a Wedge surface and cooperating with wedge surfaces on opposed sides of said latter block.
