GEORGE 1?. THCIVIAS, OF GLENSI-IAW, PENNSYLVANIA.
PUNCHING-MACHINE.
Application filed May 12,
T 0 (all 10 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE P. THoMAs, a resident of Glenshaw, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Punching-lllachines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to metal-punching machines, and the object thereof is to provide a multiple punching machine for punching plates, such as boiler, tank, girder and like plates, whereby the time required for effecting the punching may be reduced to a minimum.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying sheets of drawings, of which Figure 1 is a somewhat diagrammatic front elevation of a punching machine embodying the invention; Fig. 2 a horizontal sectional View taken on the line lI-ll, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a somewhat diagrammatic rear view of a portion of the machine; Fig. t a vertical sectional view taken on the line IV-IV, Fig. 1, the parts in Fig. 4: being shown to enlarged scale and in greater detail than indicated in Figs. 1 and 3; and Fig. 5 a detached view of a detail explained hereinafter, the plane of view-being indicated by the line VV, Fig. 3.
The punching machine includes the usual elements common to machines of this general character, namely a frame 1, a reciproeating head 2 adapted to carry punches, and an anvil 3, attached to or forming a part of the frame 1, and adapted to support dies arranged to cooperate with the punches carried by the reciprocating head.
In the practice of the invention the punching head and anvil are provided with punch and die carriers equipped with a series of cooperatingpunches and dies arranged in a line extending transversely of the line of feed of a blank through the punch, the carriers being laterally movable during the operation of the punch. In addition to this line of transversely extending punches and dies. mounted on the movable carriers, the punching head is further provided with one or more series of cooperating punches and dies lying in a line or in lines extending parallel to the line of feed through, and immovable during the operation of, the punch. Of the latter series, preferably two lines are provided, one line being adjacent to each end of the transversely movable series of punches and dies. T he general arrangement Specification of Letters Patent.
1920. Serial No. 380,796.
is such that a transverse line of holes, either in theend of plate or intermedlate to 1ts ends, may be punched by the transverse otherwise possible by reason of the required widths of the punch holders.
Referring to the illustrative embodiment of the invention, the reciprocating head 1 may be provided with a laterally movable carrier 4: provided with a l -slot, 50 adapted to receive a T-he'ad 5 formed on the punching head. In a similar manner, the anvil 3 may be provided with a die carrier 6 having a depending tongue 7 extending into the slug-receiving recess of the anvil. The punches 8 may be carried by holders 9 each firmly secured to the punch carrier 4, and the dies 10 may be mounted upon die holders 11 each attached to the die carrier 6. The punches and dies, as well as their respective holders, and the manner of attaching the holders to their carriers, may of course vary as desired, the particular construction shown herein being merely for illustrative purposes.
For moving the tran verse series of punches'and dies laterally, the die carrier 6 may, as indicated particularly in Figs. 1 and 2, be provided with a lug 12 having a screw threaded opening adapted to receive a threaded rod 13 which may be rotated by a hand wheel 1. That the die carrier 6 and punch carrier a may be simultaneously moved, the lug 12 may be provided with an upwardly-extending rod or boot 15 adapted to be received by a guideway or shoe 16 depending itrom the punch carrier 1. As inclicated in the drawings, a boot and shoe connection may be, and preferably is, provided between both ends of the punch and die carriers. In place of the boot and shoe construction shown herein, the punch and die carriers may be connected to each other for simultaneous movement in the manner illustrated in my pending application Serial No. 308,180, filed July 2, 1919. (Patent No. 1,342,879 dated June 8, 1920.)
Patented July 5, 19921.
The series of punches 17 and dies 18, parallel to the line of feed, may be mounted in suitable holders 19 and 20, respectively, the punch holder 19 being attached to the punching head and the die holder 20 attached to the anvil. lVithin the range of working limitations any desired number of punches and dies 17 and 18 may be arranged in series parallel to the line of feed through the punch, and for punching a plate of a given width the punch holder 19 and die holder 20 may be preliminarily adjusted laterally upon the punching head and anvil so that the punches and dies will be in the proper position to punch the lines of holes adjacent to the edges of the plates. A punch holder 19 and die holder 20 may be provided at each end of the transverse line of punches 8 and dies 9, as seen in Fig. 2, and such holders may each be equipped with double lines of punches and dies for punching double lines of holes in the side of a plate.
While the punch holder 19 may be variously attached to the punching head 1, such holder is preferably provided with a tongue 26 adapted to engage a ledge or flange 27 on the lower face of the head 1 extending transversely thereof, and bolts 28 may engage T-slots 29 formed in the side of the head. The die holder 20 may be clamped in a carrier 30 by screw bolts 33, and the carrier may be clamped to the anvil 3 by bolts 32. Suitable means, such as wedges 34 may be provided for adjusting the position of the die holders so that the dies will accurately register with the punches.
At the rear of the transverse line of punches S and dies 10 there is provided a stripper attached to the lower ends of rods 36 supported by the punch frame 1. For stripping from the parallel lines of punches 1.7 a stripper having fingers 37 may be attached to the top of the die carrier 30 in the manner indicated in Figs. 3 and 5.
Instead of attaching the punch carriers 4 and 19 to the main body of the punching head 1, such head is preferably provided with a facing block 38 of the general shape indicated in Fig. 3, such block being attached to the punching head by means of screw bolts 39 and 40.
In operation, the line of feed through the punch is in the direction indicated by the arrows 25 shown on Figs. 2 and 4:. The transverse line of holes in the ends or inter mediate the ends of the plate are punched by the transverse lines of punches and dies 8 and 10. When the required spacing of the transverse line of holes is so small that the holes cannot, by reason of the minimum possible spacing of the punch holders, all be punched simultaneously, or when there are so many holes in the transverse lines that the punch is not powerful enough to punch them all at one stroke, or when a staggered arrangement of transverse holes is required, certain of the holes may be punched at one stroke of the punch, and, before the next stroke of the punch, the hand wheel 14 may be turned to cause the punch and die carriers to move laterally to bring the punches and dies 8 and 10 in proper positions for punching other holes. After the transverse line of holes in the entering end of the plate has been punched, the plate may then be fed through the punch to the position of the 1011- gitudinal series of punches 17 and dies 18 for punching the side holes in multiple groups, such punches and dies being immovable during the punching operation. There thus results a very substantial saving in time of the punching operation.
I claim 1. In a multiple plate-punching machine, the combination of a frame provided with an anvil, a reciprocating head, laterally movable punch and die carriers borne respectively by said head and anvil, means for moving said carriers laterally during the operation of the punch, said carriers be ing equipped with a series of cooperating punches and dles arranged in a lme transverse to the line of feed through the punch for punching end and intermediate transverse lines of holes, and a series of cooperating punches and dies attached to said head and arranged in a line parallel to the line of feed through said punch for punching holes in multiple in the side of a plate, said last mentioned series of punches and dies being immovable during the punching operation.
2. In a multiple plate-punching machine, the combination of a frame provided with an anvil, a reciprocating head, laterally movable punch and die carriers borne respectively by said head and anvil, means for moving said carriers laterally during the operation of the punch, said carriers being equipped with a series of cooperating punches and dies arranged in a line transverse to the line of feed through the punch for punching end and intermediate transverse lines of holes, and lines of punches and dies arranged parallel to said line of feed one adjacent to each end of said transverse line of punches and dies, said parallel lines of punches and dies being attached to said head and anvil for punching holes in multiple in the sides of a plate, said last mentioned lines of punches and dies being immovable during the punching operation.
3. In a multiple plate-punching machine, the combination of a frame provided with an anvil, a reciprocating head, laterally movable punch and die carriers borne respectively by said head and anvil, means for moving said carriers laterally during the operation of the punch, said carriers being equipped with a series of cooperating punches and dies arranged in a line transverse to the line of feed through the punch, tioned punches.
a stripper for said punches at the rear of the line thereof, punch and die carriers at the rear of said transverse line of punches and dies and equipped With coperating punches and dies arranged in a line parallel to the line of feed through the punch, and a stripper attached to said last-mentioned die carrier for stripping from said last men- 10 In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
