Beit known that I, N onlus ELMORE CLARK, a 'citizen .of the United Statea, residing at Plainville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slitting echanism,lofwhicl1 the following is a speeication. My invention relates to mechanism for slitsheets or plates, particularly ting or lancing ofmetal.

After the ba :k cutters have formed rows of slits as shown at the lower edge of Fig. 3, the stock comes under the action ofthe front punch cutters 30, 30, and die cutters 15, 15, which s I`lit the ends of the strands formed by the-ljack cutters and thus form the desired substantially flat product .with relatively staggered slits as shown in the upper part of Fig. 3.
Although the operation of this mechanism in its referred form does not remove any stock, vhave used the term punch memagainst. one wall, the ends olf the cutters abutber simply to render reference to the location ting against each other.
and general relative movement more easy. It is obvious that the upperl member might be stationary and the lower member movable.
What I claim is:
1. Slitting mechanism comprising spaced. rows of punch and die cutters arranged in staggered relation, the cutters in each row abutting against each other at the ends and being beveled on the corners and beveled on the aces away l'rom the cutting edges.
