The punch unit preferably includes any suitable stripping means for withdrawing the punch from the Work. In the construction shown, such stripping means include a stripper member 33, which is suitably mounted on a. sleeve 34 extending about the punch 22. The lower end of this sleeve is preferably provided with an out- This iiange cooperates with a corresponding inwardly extending flange 36 formed on an upward cylindrical exten- Vsion 31 of an abutment ring 38, and 39 represents a stripper spring which is interposed between the abutment ring 38 and the stripper 33. The punch 22 preferably terminates slightly below the upper face of the stripper 33.
It will be readily seen that when the ram I6 moves the punch carrier downwardly from the position shown in Fig. 1, to the lower position shown in Fig. 7, the die 24 will engage the upper face-of the work and move the work downwardly so that the stripper 33 is depressed against the resistance of the spring 39 until the punch 22 has passed through the work and into the lower end of the die 24. Upon upward movement of the ram I6, the spring 39 forces the stripper upwardly into the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 3, thus stripping the work from the punch 22. The construction described also has the advantage thatthe sleeve 34 and stripper 33 serve to 'guide andzupport the .punch in correct relation to the die Y The die carrier may be mounted for correct movement toward and from the punch in any suitable manner, for example, by accurately alined holse or apertures of any desired sizes or shapes. In order to facilitate the manufacture of my improved punching devices, I preferably make the die carrier, thestripper, the punch head, and the abutment ring of the same diameter, and consequently, a pair of alined holes 40 and 4| may be accuratelybored through the enlarged portions of the head and base of the holder completely Yfrom the top of the head through the bottom ofthe base, these holes being spaced apart by the gap between the head and base of the-holder. Consequently, the punch head which is in the' lower part of the hole in the base of the holder will rest upon any support upon which the holder I8 is mounted. Consequently, 'when the holder is detached from its support, a punch of the desired size and its stripper assembly may be inserted upwardly through the bottom of the hole 4| or downwardly through the upper hole 40 into the lower hole 4|. A punch holder of this construction carries none of the strains resulting from the punching operation, so that the holder merely serves to guide the-die in its movement toward and from the punch.

In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4, the adapter includes a clamping member 16, which is formedl to be secured to the bed rail 13. The slidev89 of the adapter is provided with any suitable means for mounting the holder I8 of the punching device thereon. For example, the slide member may be provided with a hole adapted to receive the pilot pin 29 of the punching device and may also `be provided with an aperture to receive the head of a screw 93 for engaging in the threaded hole 56 of the holder for securing the punching device to the slide 88.
In the use of this adapter, the clamping member 81 may be secu'r'ed in any desired position lengthwise of the bed'rail 13 by means 4of the wedge member 80. For positioning the punching deviceA crosswise of the rail, the set screw 9| may be released and the slide 89 moved between the anges 88 to position the punching device crosswise of Athe ra-il 13 and when 'the punching device is in @the desired position, thev set screw 9| is tightened for locking the punching device in such position.
Punching devices of the type described in which the die is movable toward and from the punch have a number of advantages over punching devices as heretofore used. In the first place, no holes are required in a bolster plate or in the lower portion of the holder I8 through which the slugs or punchings may be discharged. Consequently, the punching devices may be arranged as closely together as desired, since suflicient clearness toV permit punchings to be discharged need not be provided. By means of the constructions shown the die carrier discharges the slugs or punchings from a side thereof, for example, from the front as shown in the drawings, and these lpunchings may, consequently, be dropped on the work 2l and will, consequently, be discharged from the press when the work is withdrawn. said die unit having a portion extending above said head of said holder for engagement with the ram oi' a press, and a pilot pin extending upwardly from said die unit in coaxial relation therewith and yieldingly mounted to permit said pilot pin to recede into said die unit when engaged by the ram of the press.

A punching device for use on a press having a stationary bed and a ram movable toward and from said bed, said punching device including a holder having a head and a base spaced apart to receive between them the` work, axially alined apertures in said head and base. a punch arranged in said aperture in said base, a die holder in said aperture in said head, and extending above said head in position to be engaged by said ram, a die mounted on said die holder in operative relation to said punch, a pilot pin arranged in an aperture in the upper end of said die, coaxial with said die and punch. and a spring for urging oi said punch extending through said head and below said base to form .a pilot pin, and a die mounted in said head to move toward and from said punch.

Apparatus for mounting a plurality oi punching devices on the bed of a press brake, including a rai1 formed for securing on said bed and having a substantially ilat upper face and upwardly and outwardly inclined longitudinal edge portions, a, clamping member for each punching device and for mounting upon said rail and having a portion extending crosswise of said rail and downwardly extending iianges, one of said flanges engaging one inclined edge portion of said rail, a wedge member arranged between said other flange and the other edge portion of said rail, means for moving said wedge member into clamping engagement with said last mentioned iiange and edge portion to lock said clamping member on said rail, and means for securing a punching device on said clamping member, said clamping members being adjustable lengthwise of said rail when said wedge member is released from clamping engagement with said rail.

Apparatus for adjustably mounting a plurality of self-contained punching devices on a bed of a press brake, including a rail of substantially uniform cross sectional shape throughout its length and constructed to be secured to said bed, a plurality of adapters on said rail and movable lengthwise thereof to diierent positions along said rail, means for clamping said adapters in the desired positions lengthwise of said rail,
and means for securing a punching device to each l adapter, whereby a plurality of holes may be punched simultaneously in work in the desired spaced relation to each other.
17. Apparatus for adjustably mounting a plurality of self-contained punching devices on a bed of a press brake, including a rail of substantially uniform cross sectional shape throughout its length and constructed to be secured to said bed,a plurality of adapters on said rail and movable lengthwise thereof to different positions along said rail, means for clamping said adapters in the .desired positions lengthwise of said rail, slides on said adapters adjustable in a direction transversely of said rail, means for locking said slides against movement relatively to said adapters, and means for securing a punching device to each slide, whereby said punching devices may be adjusted both lengthwise and transversely of said rail.

An adapter for adjustably mounting a selfcontained punching device on a rail, including a clamping device having means for securing said clamping device in the desired position lengthwise of said rail, a slide mounted on said ciamping device for movement transversely of said rail, means for securing said slide in the desired position on said clampingdevice, and means for securing a punching device to said slide.
19. A method of perforating work by means oi a plurality of unitary punching devices, each of which includes a die and a punch cooperating with the die, said method comprising mounting a plurality of said punching devices on a single bolster plate, formed for universal adjustment and mounting of said punching devices thereon, in correct relation to each other to produce the work desired, placing said plate with said punching devices secured thereto on the bed of a press in operative relation to the ram thereof, perforating the required number of pieces of work, then removing said bolster plate from the press, and removing the punching devices therefrom for use on other work.

A sheet material punching apparatus for use between the bed and ram of a press, comprising a pluralityl of punching devices, eachof which includes a stationary punch and a die movable toward and from the punch, said die extending into aposition tobe actuated by the ram of the press for perforating the work, a 'pilot pin arranged axially on said die, spring means for urging said pin into an operative position in which said pin projects above the die, said pin beingV movable against said spring means into a position in which said pilot pin does not project -above said die, a template for cooperation with a. plurality of said punching devices, and having accurately located holes, into which said pilot pins are forced by said spring means when said punching devices are in correct relation tosaid template, and means for securingsad punching deV` a pluralityof said punching Adevices resting on by saidram.
