to provide a novel machine for punching structural shapes and the like with precision and rapidity; to provide for automatically centering and positioning the punches and die blocks; to provide for edecting the fore-` going hydraulically; to provide for automatic control in such a machine for either a single punching mechanism or a plurality of punching mechanisms operating upon a shape traveled through the machine; to pro.- vide for automatic control of such a machine from a distance record device; to provide a hydraulically `operated machine of the kind last mentioned; to provide various novel combinations and instrumentalities for carrying out the Various features of the invention already indicated or hereinafter pointed out. These and other objects of invention will in part be set forth hereinafter and in part will be obvious herefrom.
The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown andv described.
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and forming a part hereof, illus` trate one embodiment ofthe invention and together with the description serve to eX- lain the principlesthereof.

Referring to the embodiment illlustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, suitable means are shown for traveling and stopping a structural shape, such as an I- beam ai, relatively to the punching devices to be punched thereby. The particular form of such means is immaterial so far as concerns many features of our invention, and as embodied we have illustrated in a general way the form of such means shown in co-pending application for Patent Serial No. 814,380, filed January 26, 1914,
for traveling the beam longitudinally. In the illustrated form the shape rests upon i a series of driveny rolls 1, arranged in a horizontal pathway past one or more punching mechanisms.
The travel and stopping of the beam w relatively to. the punching means is controlled by distance determining devices, and connections therefrom tothe beam, As embodied, a head 2 is in delinite position with respect to the shape a", traveling therewith in such definite position, and preferably the leading end of the shape abuts against the head 2. Fixed tothe head 2 isa long rail or bar 3 extending backwardly along the shape m and traveling preferably guiding rollers 4. The bar 3 is provided on its top face with gear teeth 5, with,` which meshes the pinion .on the shaft of the distance determining device as shown in application SerialfNo. 814,380 before referred to. Thus the shape is traveled and stopped in accurate conformity with the setting ofthe distance determining devices to have the holes punched therein 'at the points or positionsin the beam corresponding to the settings ofthe distance determining devices. i
Referring now more particularly to the embodied punching devices, hydraulic means are provided for bringing the punch and die to the work and for punching the holes in the beam. Said punching mechanism is mounted in a vsuitable housing or frame, comprising plates 10'and 11, arranged vertically and parallel to each other and supported further by suitable means such as base angles 12, and having connecting .ties orstays 13. Means for effecting relative movement between the punching mechanism and the beam in a Adirection transversely to the length bf the beam and-in accordance with the settings of the distance determining devices are provided, and in the embodied form the punching mechanism travels trans, versely relatively to the beam under the control of the distance determining means.
In such embodied form upon the plates 10 and 11 horizontally arranged guides 15 and 16. Reciprocably mounted in said guides 15 and 'of cross frames or cross heads arranged at either side of the punching mechanism y proper, the upper cross head 17 and the corresponding lower cross head 18 being shown in section in Fig. 1, and being shown in their entirety in Figs. 13 and 14. The corresponding pair of cross frames 19 and 20 are arranged upon the opposite side ofthe punching mechanism and likewise reciprocate in the respective horizontal guides 15 and 16 carried by the plates 10 and 11. The cross heads or cross frames 17, 18, 19 and 20 are each apertured medially of their length.- In the apertures of cross frames 17 and 18 is in suitable, guides,

Means are provided by the invention for ioating the punch and die, that is, automatically centering them with respect to the work irrespective of the size of beam being run through, as in the case of punching the web of an I-beam. If different sized beams are'run in on the rollers 1, the height or position of the web will vary dependent upon the depth of the flange of the beam, andit is desirable and also necessary for rapid work that the punching mechanism automatically center itself with respect to beams of di'erent sizes. In the embodied form, whicltis adapted to av hydraulic punch, a plunger 40 is fixed to the frame. piece 30, the plunger 40 being hollow. A plunger 57 is fixed to the cross frame 55 the cylinder head and the in a suitable manner, as by a screw thread 56 in an aperture in the frame 55. The plunger 57 works in a cylinder 58 in the frame piece 30, the cylinder 58 communicating by a passage 59 with a suitable source of fluid pressure supply, such as a pipe 60.
The manner of operation of the punching mechanism described and shown is substantially as follows:

4In Figs. 7, 8 and 9, a system of fluid `pressure actuating means and controls for the general arrangement or system of punches just described are illustrated, the parts being somewhat differently disposed and proportioned for the sake of clearness. As embodied, the system will be regarded as hydraulically operated and in certain aspects of the invention this is the preferred form. The pressure tank 90 is kept under VYsubstantially constant pressure in a suitable manner,- as by an air pump 91 driven by a suitable motor 92, although so far as concerns many featuresl of the invention the pressure could be maintained and regulated in the tank 90 otherwise, as by a system of weights for example. Suitable means for controlling the pump 91 and motor 92 to maintain a constant pressure in the cylinder 90 may be provided of any desired or approved form.
The water is kept in circulation and at pressure in the system by a pump 93 driven by a motor 94, suitable controls of any approved kind being provided therefor. Pressure pipe 95 connects to pressure pipe 96, which communicates by a pipe 97 with the accumulator tank 90. A general return or exhaust pipe 98 communicates by a pipe 99 with a return or reservoir tank 100. A

A similarly swiveled exhaust pipe 122 connects from the valve 118 to the pipe 98. Cylinder 41c is provided with a main valve 123 and a pilot valve 124, which may likewise be automaticallyI controlled as already described. A swivel pipe 125 connects from the valve 123 to a pressure pipe 96, and a swivel pipe 126 connects from valve 123 to the exhaust or return pipe 98. The left hand cylinder 76 is provided with a main valve 127, and with a pilot valve 128 which may have an automatic solenoid control. The pipe 130 supplies the pressure fluid to valve 127 through pipe 131, and pipe 132 communicates from valve 127 to exhaust or return pipe 112. Left hand cylinder 82 is provided with a main valve 133 and with a pilot valve 134, which may have the automatic solenoid control. Valve 133 is supplied with pressure fluid through pipe 135 and-communicates by pipe 136 with return pipe 112.
The invention, in accordance with certain features thereof, provides a form of the device whereby the entire centering is not eected by the cylinder, but the punch blocks and die blocks are preliminarily positioned or' centered for beams or shapes of different sizes, and the working stroke there- `by shortened and the time of operation decreased. In this case the floating action of the cylinder and plunger is employed only to bring the centered punch and die to the work and to make the perforations. In the embodied form (Figs. 12, 13 and 18), the rods 21 and 22, are screw threaded at their upper end, as indicated by reference nu-, meral 140. Screw thread 140 on said rods 21 and 22, respectively, engages the internal thread of a sleeve 141, which sleeve is rotatably supported in cross frames 17 and 19, and having a collar or flange 142 seated upon the bracket. Fixed to each sleeve 141 is a worm wheel 143, which meshes with a worm 144 on a shaft 145, which shaft extends across the machine from rod 21 to pipe communicating with,
movement of the f rody 22. Shaft 145 is driven by a gear 146 aperture in the' movable punch bevel gear 162.

Thus as the shaft 145 is rotated, rods 21 and 22 are raised or lowered, and the center of the unches and dies moves therewith, to suit the size of the beam which is fed in on the rolls 1.
Means are provided by the invention, in accordance with one of its features, for positioning the punches and dies with respect to each other, and also for effecting and controlling such relative positioning lfrom the distance recordl sheet. As em'- bodied, one punch and-die, or one set of the punches and dies are fixed in position, as shown in Figs. 1 2' and 15, Rotatably mounted in the stationary punch'block 150 vis a shaft 151. Shaft 1,51Y -passes block 153 and is screw threaded at 152 to engage an internal'thread formedin the aperture in punch block 153. Shaft A151 connects by a universal joint 154with`a short shaft 155, said shaft 155 being journaled in a bracket 156 supported on cross frame 20.
A similar arrangement is provided for the die blocks, a shaft 157 being rotatably mounted in a fixed die block 158. Shaft 157 passes through a movable die block 159, the shaft having a screw thread 160 engagin an internal thread in the aperture of the die block 159. Means are provided for rotating shafts 155 and 157 to and' fro to correspondingly move the punch and die blocks 153 and 159, and as embodied shaft 157 has a beveled pinion 1.61, meshing with a Gear 162 is fixed on a sleeve 163 embracing rod 22. Fixed also to sleeve 163 is a bevel gear 164 meshing with a bevel pinion 165 fixed on shaft 155. Thus shafts 155 and 157 rotate in unison, while provision has been made by joint 154 for the reciprocation of the punches. Joint 154 also has a telescoping action due to changes in the level of shafts 151 and 155. Sleeve 163 is rotated to and fro by suitable means, such as a bevel pinion 169 meshing with gear 164 and fixed to a shaft 170. to which shaft is also fixed a slip or friction gear 166, driven by a pinion 167 driven by a motor 168.
The movement and positioning of the punches and dies are controlled by suitable devices. and in accordance with one feature of the invention. this is effected from the distance record `heet or by manually settable devices. As embodied, solenoid operated means are provided for this purpose. (')n bracket 156 are supported a series of solenoids 171.l which have suitable circuit connections to the distance record sheet or to the manually settable devices. The solenoid cores operate pins 17 2 working in aperthrough an V .dicated by b tures in the walls of the-supporting ring or bracket 156. Extending downwardly (Figs. 16 and 17 from the bevel gear is a lug 1 3 which is engaged by any set pin 1-72, thus stopping the gear 164, the sleeve 163 -and gear 162, and thus positioning-the punches and dies at the desired point. If desired, a like stop pin control could be applied to shaft 145.

The winding of the solenoid controlling the punch for the beam flanges is correspondingly indicated by 115. B indicates the solenoid actuated switch, controlled from the stop circuit of the motor whichoperates and controls shaft 62 of the transverse distance determining device. controlled in the usual manner,-from the stop circuit of motor 168, Figs. 13 and 16. D is the solenoid actuated switch controlled from stop circuit of the longitudinal distance determining device, and controlling the movement and stopping of rack bar 3 in the manner described and referred to, land also controlling the motor driving the rolls 1. Switches B, C and D time the action of the punch by holding the circuit open until the various motors all come to a stop.

The windings of the gag solenoids, shown in Fig. 15 of the drawings. are indicated in Fig. 19 by the word Gags, the distance record sheet thereby selecting the desired punches. Other solenoids may be controlled from the distance record sheet in like manner. and the circuits therefor would be shown practically as duplgites of some of the present circuits. WW
The mechanism just described for automatically regulating the relative positioning of the punches and dies has been made the subject-matter of a divisional application, Serial No. 179.887filed July 11. 1917.
