To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL BoHLn, residing atEssen, Germany, a citizen of the German Republic. have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Press for Manufacturing Sheet Metal and Plates with Turned-Up Outer Edges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to presses of the kind described in the former application of Karl Bohleg Serial No. 428,115, filed December 3, 1920, and the object of the invention is to enable sheet metal end plates, the turned up outer edge of which has two parts situated opposite eachother and a third part which meets with the two first mentioned parts in rounded off corners, to be carried out in one single operation.
One embodiment of the invention will be described'by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows the parts concerned of a press intended for the manufacture of locomotive fire box walls and in which drawing Fig. l is a planet the die of the press.

The locomotive fire box wall A which is to be produced (see Figs. 1, 2 and 5) is provided on three of its sides with a turned up outer edge. which has two parts a and a situated opposite each other and a third part c which meets with the two first mentioned parts in rounded off corners a and a. In

and simultaneously and consequently, a thickening of the material which thickening increases towards the upper edge.
The die of the press employed for the production of such a locomotive fire box wall consists of a frame B 13 made in two parts (see Figs. 1 and 2) and the surfaces of which producing the turning over of the edges of the piece of work run parallel with the longitudinal axis of the press and are shaped to correspond to the form of the piece of work.
The ram of the press has a central piece C with a projecting edge 0 the outer side boundary face of which is shaped to correspond approximately to the inner surface of the turned up edge of the piece of work. To this central piece C is rigidly attached, by means of screws'E, a base plate D (see Figs. 3 to 5). The surface of the base plate D next to the piece of work A. is cut away, as shown in Fig. 5, to correspond to the longitudinal section of the bottom portion of the piece of work A. Between the central piece C and the base plate D are mov ably mounted two angle-shaped parts F" and G the movement of which islimited and which parts F and G are intended to cooperate with the die B B in the turning over of the edge of the piece of work A.
The lateral boundary surfaces 7, f and g of the parts F and G run parallel with the longitudinal axis of the press, while the surfaces i and g of these parts (see particularly Fig. 6) which are intended to cooperate with the corresponding surfaces of the die B B for turning over the parts a and a of the edge of the piece of work, are in clinecl to the longitudinal axis of the press at an angle which makes allowance for the increase in the thickness of the walls of the parts a and a The parts F and G of the ram of the press are held in their outer extreme postion (shown in Figs. 3 and 4:) by screw bolts H, which are arranged on both sides of the central longitudinal axis of the ram of the press. Two of these screw bolts H are arranged in the corners opposite the surfaces f and g obliquely to the central longitudinal axis of the press ram, while the others lie at right angles to the central longitudinal axis. The screw bolts H bear up by cylindrical heads 7L1 against the inner side walls of the parts F and Grand are subjected to the action of springs J, which oppose any movement of the parts F and G towards the central longitudinal plane of the ram of thepress. The springs J are placed in recesses c in the central piece C 7 through which the screw bolts H pass. The ends of the screw bolts H opposite thecylindrical heads h project intootherrecesses c in the central piece C and carry screw nuts 72, by means of which the bolts H can be longs also a thrust plate M (see Fig. 5) bearing against an abutment (not shown) and the surface of which next to the piece of work A is shaped to correspond to the longitudinal section of the bottom portion of the piece of work.
In the outer extreme position (Fig. 3) of I the parts F and G which position is fixed by the adjustment of the bolts H and the discshaped spring K, these parts, together with the die B B fix a breadth of gap which is somewhat smaller than the thickness of the edge of the piece of work;
Previous to pressing the abutment (not shown) of the press is raised so far that the thrust plate M laid on it projects beyond the upper end face of the die B B resting on the table of the press. The piece of work A is then laid on the thrust plate "M and the part .6 D F- G of the ram of the press placed on the piece of work, after which the die and the ram of thepress are adjusted in the correct mutual positions. During the pressing operation roper which now follows the ram together with the piece of work A is forced through the die, thus producing the turning up of the edge of the piece of work. During this operation the parts F and G of the ram, since, as has beenstated above the breadth of the gap between the die and the active por tionof the ram is smaller than the thickness ofthe'piece'of work, will be thrust back against the action of the springs J and K both at right angles tothe central longitudinalplane of the ram and also longitudinally thereof. Inthis operation the arrangement of the inclined surfaces f and enables the material of those parts of the edges which form the corners af and a of the piece .of work to expand unimpeded towards its free end, without any gaps beingformed between the surfaces 1 and g of the ram and the pieceof work. The parts F and G of the ram are therefore forced by the action of the springs J and K in all directions against the edge of the piece of work .A, so that the outer surface of the turned up edge runs parallel at all points with the longitudinal axis of the press, without requiring any subsequent treatment.
On the withdrawal of the ram from the turned up or flanged piece of work the parts F and G of theram are for-cedinwards against the action of the springs J and K by the parts a and a of the edge which are thickened at their free ends and that to such an extent that they can be withdrawn without hindrance from the piece of work.
Claims: 1. Afflanging press for the manufacture of sheet metal plates flanged on their outer rim comprising a female die member having a flanging portion which consists of two parts lying opposite each other and a third part'meeting said two first-named. parts in rounded corners and a stamp having a flanging portion of a corresponding shape" adapted to enter the fianging portion of said female die member in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the press, one of said fianging portions being rigid and the other consisting of two members movable. relatively to'eachother in a plane perpendicular to said axis in two directions different from each other, said two movable members being adapted to elastically yield in the sense of increasing the clearance left betweenthem and said rigid fianging portion.

A flanging press for the manufacture of sheet metalplates flanged on their outer rim comprising a female die member having a rigid flanging portion which consistsnof two parts lying opposite eachother and a third part meeting said two first-named parts in rounded corners and a stamp having a flanging portion of a corresponding shape i adapted to enter. the flanging portion ofsaid female die member in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the press, the flanging portion of'said stampv consisting of two members movable relatively to each other in a plane perpendicular to said axis in tWo directions different from each other, said two movable members being adapted to elastically yield in the sense of increasing the clearance left between them and said rigid fianging portion.
4c. A fianging press for the manufacture of sheet metal plates flanged on their outer rim comprising a female die member having a rigid fianging portion which consists of two parts lying opposite each other and a third part meeting said tWo first-named parts in rounded corners, a stamp having a fianging portion of a corresponding shape adapted to enter the Hanging portion of said female die member in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the press, the flanging portion of said stamp consisting of tWo members movable relatively to each other in a plane perpendicular to said axis in tWo directions different from each other, and a plurality of springs tending to move said movable members in the sense of diminishing the clearance left between them and said rigid flanging portion, two of said springs being arranged to act in planes each bisecting one of said corners.
5. A fianging press for the manufacture of sheet metal plates flanged on their outer rim comprising a female die member having a flanging portion Which consists of two parts lying opposite each other and a third part meeting said two first-named parts in rounded corners and a stamp having a flanging portion of a corresponding shape adapted to enter the fianging portion of said female die member in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the press, one of said flanging portions being rigid and the other consisting of two members movable relatively to each other in a plane perpendicular to said axis in tWo directions difierent from each other, said two movable members being adapted to elastically yield in the sense of increasing the clearance left between them and said rigid flanging portion and the parts of the stamp adapted to enter said corners being so bevelled off that on the pressing opera tion the material of the plate to be flanged can freely expand inwards.
