HALSEYW; TAYLOR, or WARREN, onto.
DRINKING FGUNTAIN.
Application filed June 6, 1927. Serial No. 196,728.
My invention relatesto an improvement in drinking fountains, especially a drinking fountain of the kind and type shown in my Letters Patent of the United States, No.
1,624,081, dated April 12, 1927, in which a iioating weight or plunger is utilized to vent a part of the water supply and maintain an arched drinking stream or column water in a fixed shape regardless of fluctuations in the supply. The present limprovement is de signed to yield the same results as stated, hut structurally the'present device .is simplerand more compactly arranged and'constructedy tion of the fountain head on line 3-#3 of Fig.V
1. Figs. 4, 5, and 6, are sectional views of the fountain head cap, the combined balancing weight and nozzle member, and the main body of the attachment, respectively. Fig. 7 isa sectional vieu7 of a modification showing a doublestream projector.v Fig. 8 is a sectional view of another modiiication of the invention, and Fig. 9 is a horizontal section on line 99 ofFigS. ,f 'i
The present device comprises a tubular body-2 having a reduced screw-threaded stem or extension 3 adapted to connect with a water supply fitting or pipe not shown, but which it should be understood, may include or contain a valve'to control the outflow ofV water for drinking purposes, together with.
mental character or kind to provide vertical drain passages 6 at the outer side of body 2, and the flat top 7 of cap 4, is horizontally.
inclined and contains a round opening 8 charged vertically at a steep inclination'.Vv The ly confined within a fountain head or hollow f the screw-threads 5 are mutilated or of seg- Y through which the drinking stream Vis disf upper end of body 2 contains a circular chamber 9 having a bead or annular valve seat 10 at its bottom surrounding the main Water intake passage 11, and a round cylindrical element 12 of a predetermined size and weight is loosely confined within chamber 9 and formed with an annular depression 13 at its bottom adapted to rest upon the bead or annular seat 10 when-thewater is shut oit', or the Ypressure is so reduced. that the rforce of the water against'thebottom of element 12 is entirely overcome by the Weight of such y f element. A,verticallyeinclined passage or outlet port 14 extends through element 12 axially in line with opening 10 in cap 7, and a pin 15 projects into a vertical passage 16 in the wall of body 2 and holds the eiement in that aligned position. The intake end of port 14 is located centrallyef the annular'v valvev seat 1() at the upper end of circular chamber 9, andthe water is free to escape through port 111y at all times. The Water is alsofree to escape laterally from beneath the Y floating. weight or element 12, whenever Hthis weight or element is raised'fapart from valve,
seat 10." vVent openings 17 in the side wall of chamber 9 are opened more or less when element 12 is raised more or less. Such variableV movement of element 12l occurs when fluctuation in the water pressure takes place. rlhc pressurev and volume of water being known and the device designed and set accordingly the water is discharged through port 14 and thereby, formed into an` arched drinking stream of apredetermined height. It the kvolume or pressure o' water is increased bef yond this normal Working condition vthe 'stream-forming element 12 is raised andthe ,Water vents through side openings 17, and the drinkingcolumn is not substantially altered in shape and form spurting of water, in turning on the stream initially, is also prevented.
In Fig. 7 I show a founntain head of the 'same I general structure as described, eXcepting that a combined Weight and stream-form f ing element 18 contains two ports 19 and 20 adapted to-project two separate streams into confluence to form a single arched drinking stream.
In Figs. 8 and 9, show a modification com-- Vprising a flanged body 21 having radial ribs r22, and a weighted stream forming element 23 seated loosely thereon, the said weight or ele-v ment having an inclined port 124. in its top to form the drinking stream and a flange ory skirt 25 adapted to confine the element in n Ln) place upon body 21. A pin 26 in flange 25 limits the movement of element 23 vertically and rotatably.
What I claim is:
l. A drinking fountain fitting or head, comprising a body having a Water supply passage and a vent opening, and a Weighted element movably seated and adapted to control the flow of Water through said ventopening While constantly exposed to the pressure of the Water Within the supply passage, said movable element having an opening therein conimunicating with said supply passage of thev body for jetting Water vertically for drinking' purposes.
2. A drinking fountain fitting or head, comprising a body having a Water supply passage, a vent opening and valve seat, and a Weighted element loosely seated upon said valve seat adapted to control the amount of Water flowing through said vcntfopening, said Weighted element having an inclined passage in communication with said supply passage and adapted to jet a stream of Water pwardly at an inclination to form an arched drinking stream.
3. A drinking fountain fitting or head,
l comprising a body having a Water supply passage and vent openings, a Weighted Velement loosely seated upon said body opposite said vent openings and constantly exposed to the pressure of Water Within said passage and shiftable by Water pressure to permit venting of Water through said vent openings, said element having` anoutlet port therein vin coinmunication with said supply passage and adapted to jet a part of the Water upwardly, and means adapted to confine said element upon said body.
4. A drinking fountain tting or bead, comprising a body having a Water supply passage, a Weighted member loosely conlined i' upon said body opposite said passage and ei;n
posedv to the Water in said passage, said inem-V ber having a discharge orifice communicating iith said passage and adapted to forma. drinking stream, and a guiding member covering said Weighted meinber'having a water escape opening opposite said orifice in the weightedmember and an open bottom for open communication of said supply passage with the open air, when by Water pressure said Weighted member is raised with respect to said body.
5. A drinking fountain fitting or head, comprising a body having al chamber formed with vent openings and a valve seat and a Water supply (passage, a Weighted element loosely scato l Within said chamber upon said valve seat and adapted. to be shifted by Water pressure for-open communication between said supply passage and said vent openings, said element having a water pa-"Zage connnunicating with said supply passa-go and adapted to form a drinking stream, a. cover for said chamber having` an opening in line with the water pz'issage or said weighted element, and means adapted to secure said parts together.
6. A drinking fountain fitting or head, coniprisin'g a liolloiv body having a chamber and a valve seat therein and formedv with mutilated screw-threads eXteriorly thereof,
a Weighted element loosely seated Within said chamber upon said valve seat having a Water discharge passage vertically therein, and a cover screw-connected with said body having a water escape opening in its top opposite the passage in said element. f
7. A drinking fountain iitting or head, comprising a body having a water supply passage and a Vvent opening, and a Weighted element seated upon said body controlling said vent opening and constantly exposed to the Water-pressure YWithin said supply passage, vsaid clement having a Water passage con'iinunicating with said supply passage, and said element being adapted to be shifted by water pressure for veiiting'of surplus Water supply through said ventopening when. discharging a stream of water constantly therefrom. f
