DRINKING-FOUNTAINL Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, LEOPOLD NVANDALIX LAoINY, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, having resided in the United States one year last past and having declared my intention of becoming a citizen thereof, residing at Belleville, in the county of St. Clair, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Drinking-Fountain, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a drinking fountain which is sanitary in its nature, and provided with means for adjusting the pressure of the water entering the same, whereby the stream as discharged, may bubble constantly from the head or cap of the device without severity, both in volume and height, and Without Spurting or splashing, the valve employed being of :a. nature to avoid corrosion or rust of the same, and there is simplicity and inexpensiveness in the construction of the device.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described. a
Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a drinking fountain embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a Vertical section of the body of the device, and side elevation of the portion within the same. Fig. 3 represents a top or plan view of the device as shown in Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings :-1 designates a cup or hollow body having at the bottom the nipple 2 for attachment to a service" pipe, and at the top the perforated discharge head or cap 3. WVithin said cup and rising from the bottom thereof and secured thereto is the sleeve or casing 4, the interior of which forms a valve chamber, the valve 5 therein being of the form of a ball, said sleeve being in communication with the interior of the nipple 2, so as to receive water from the service pipe. Connected with the upper end of said valve chamber and rising therefrom is the hollow neck 6 which is of less diameter than that of said chamber and having in its sides the ports 7 which form the outlet for the Water from said neck and consequently from the valve chamber. ample force On the top of said neck is the wall 8 in which is a screw-threaded opening 9 for the engagement of the screw or threaded stem, orstud 10, which thus depends from said wall and into said neck, and the upper portion of the valve chamber, its lower end being adapted to receive the impact of the valve 5 in the ascent of the latter.

It will be seen that the screw is of lessdiameter than that of the interior of the neck (5, so that water may flow in the neck around said screw, and so reach the ports 7 from which it enters the cup 1 and is dis charged upwardly through the head or cap 3, above which it may be drunk. It will be seen also that said screw is adjustable relatively to the pressure of water that enters the device so that the water will not be supplied to the drinker with severity nor at an excessive height above the head or cap, it being evident that as the water enters the valve chamber, it raises the valve, and causes it to contact with the screw 10 just below the base of the neck 6, so as to control the pressure of water and reduce it, as the water is about to enter said neck, and thus making more or less obstruction to the passage of the water into said neck, whereby the water will with less, but sufficient force reach the ports 7 and flow through the same into the cup, from thence to be discharged through the cap or head fountain-like in a condition controlled to cause satisfactory use to the drinker, alike in the force and height of the waterand the bubbling of the same in a perfect and constant stream without splashing. Then the cap or head is removed, the screw is accessible so that it may be moved up or down by the application and operation of an ordinary screw-driver, it being evident that said screw provides simple and inexpensive means for adjusting the throw of the valve, lessening the number of members,

Attention is drawn particularly to the fact that the ball valve employed in a device of the present character-is sensitive in its nature, so that it is quick in rising and seeking its seat on the screw, plug or stud l0 and furthermore, as it is formed of non corrodible material as stated, it will not rust due to the water to which it is subjected. Again, by the use of a ball valve, a spring to act in conjunction therewith to return it to its normal position is avoided, such spring when employed being liable to corrosion and consequent loss of resiliency, and also increasing the expensiveness of the device.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cup, a sleeve therein forming a valve chamber, a ball valve in the latter, a neck rising from said sleeve and connected therewith, said sleeve having a closing top wall, a screw stem fitted in said wall and depending adjustably therefrom into said sleeve, and a jam nut on the upper portion of said stem adapted to tighten on said wall, said neck having therein a discharge port which is above the base of said stem.
2. A cup, a valve casing therein, a gravitating ball valve in said casing, a neck rising from said casing, and connected therewith, said neck having a closing wall at the top, an outlet port in its side, an abutment for said gravitating valve suspended from said top wall of the neck above said gravitating valve, means for holding said abutment in connection with said wall, and a perforated discharge cap on the top of said cup.
A, cup, a valve casing therein, a loose ball valve in said casing, a neck rising from said casing and being detachably connected therewith and of less diameter than said casing, said neck having a port in its side, and provided with a wall on its upper end, a screw stem fitted in said wall and depending therefrom into said neck and having its lower end below said port, said screw stem forming a seat and stop for said valve in its uppermost position, and a perforated diaphragm on said cup above said neck, said parts being combined substantially as described forming an improved drinking fountain.
