It is thought that the operation of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. When the float (not shown) drops in the flush tank with the level of the water therein, the valve 4 is opened by the pressure of the water from the supply pipe and said water flows through the channel 23 and enters the hush tube l3. In passing through the spiral channels 23 the velocity of the water is reduced and said water is given a whirling motion as it enters the hush tube I3 and flows downwardly on the inner periphery thereof. A portion of the water from the spiral channel 23 is directed into the refill pipe 26 by the deflector 2?. As hereinbefore stated, the port 25 may be controlled as desired by simply rotatably adjusting the hush tube l3 in the clamp Ill. When the water level in the flush tank rises, the float operates the lever IS in a manner to close the valve 4 against the pressure in the supply pipe. Through the medium of the adjustable cap I the stroke or travel of the valve 4 may be regulated as desired. As indicated in Fig. l of the drawings, the casing 2 and the clamp 10 are set in the horizontal plane of the upper end of the usual over-flow pipe (not shown) of the flush tank. The stop 29 engaged in the recess 30 of the clamp jaw H also facilitates proper positioning of the hush tube [3 in the clamp. From the foregoing it will be seen that it is virtually impossible for water or gases to be siphoned into the pipe I and the supply pipe from the flush tank or the toilet bowl.
It is believed that the many advantages of a ball cock constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A ball cock comprising a casing for connection with a supply pipe for receiving water therefrom, a float operated valve in the casing for controlling the flow of water thereinto, a hush tube having a substantially spiral channel in its outer periphery communicating with the casing and with the interior of said hush tube, and a clamp on the casing for securing the hush tube thereto, said clamp constituting one of the walls of the channel.
2. A ball cock comprising a casing for connection with a water supply pipe for receiving water therefrom, a float operated valve in the casing for controlling the flow of water thereinto, a bush tube having a substantially spiral channel in its outer periphery having one end I portion communicating with the casing and its other end communicating with the interior of said hush tube, means for rotatably securing the hush tube to the casing, said hush tube further having a refill port therein adjacent said other end of the channel, and a bafile in the hush tube in opposed relation to said other end of the channel for directing a portion of the water therefrom into the refill port.
3. A ball cock comprising a casing including a cylinder, a seat in said cylinder, a valve operable in said cylinder and engageable with the seat for controlling the flow of water into the casing, an adjustable cap threaded on the cylinder for controlling the travel of the valve, an upstanding shank on the valve extending slidably through the cap, a gasket encircling the shank and engageable with the cap for preventing leakage through said cap around said shank, a clamp on the casing, a float operated lever mounted on said clamp and engaged with the shank for closing the valve, and a hush tube mounted in the clamp for receiving water from the casing.
