Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,388, dated December 21, 1875; application filed August 1, 1873. a

Be it, nown that I, JOHN A. KIRGHNER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Cradle- Treadle, of which the following is a specification:
This invention has for its object to furnish an ordinary rocking crib or cradle with a treadle attachment, by means of which the cradle may be rocked by the foot of the nurse; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the device in two parts, so that the treadle can be moved with the cradle, pivoted together, and attached to the cradle, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, A represents the stationary part of my treadle, having a socket, a, to receive the heel of the nurse, whereby it is kept from slipping on the floor. A is the toe part, which is pivoted thereto at I The front end of the part A is connected with the center slat of the cradlebeyond its middle by a strap, B, of such length that when the cradle is still the part A will be raised from the floor.
By depressing the toe part of the treadle and then releasing it, the cradle will be oscillated without trouble, leaving the mother or nurse free to use her hands for reading, sewing, or other work. 7
