Description

H. BEHREN.
BROOM-SEWING MACHINE.
$10 171,342. Patented Dec. 21,1875.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEErcE.
HENRY BEHREN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BROOM-SEWING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,342, dated December 21, 1875; application filed June 5, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY BEHREN, of Columbus, Franklin county, Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Broom-Sewing Machine, of which the following is a specification: I
Figure 1 represents a top view, and Fig. 2
,a side view, of my improved broom-sewing machine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to such improvements in broom-sewing machines that the jaws may be readily thrown into position for sewing the difl'erent seams, and opened for taking out the work without requiring the troublesome changin g of the pins of different lengths that have to be changed after each seam.
The invention consists of the swinging jaws of the broom-sewing machine, provided with pivoted pawls that lock into'racks and notched plates at the sides of the machine.
A in thedrawing represents the swinging jaws of different sizes, which are used for sewing the seams in the common broom-sewin g machine in use. The centrally-recessed main part B of the machine is provided at both sides, in place of the pin-holes and pins pins, and simultaneously thrown open when the broom is finished by raising the pawls from the rack-plates.
The sewing of the brooms is thus expedited and facilitated to a considerable degree.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A broom-sewing machine having swinging jaws provided with pivoted pawls of different lengths, and rack-plates at both sides of the recessed base part, for securing the jaws in position for sewing the seams of the broom,
substantially as specified.
