Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1915.
1 Application filed June 7, 1911. Serial No. 631,758.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT C; WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rod-Bending Machines, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to rod bending machines and its novelty consists in the construction and adaptation of the parts as In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of an apparatus embodying my invention with the parts in position ready for use; Fig. 2 is a similar View of the same with the parts in position after one form of rod has been bent; Fig. 3 is a section on the plane of the line 33 in Fig. 1; Fig. 1 is a section on the plane of the line 41-4 in Fig. 1; and Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 represent some of the various forms into which rods may be bent by the use of the device.
In the drawings, 10 is a bed plate or table made of any suitable size and material and adapted to support the parts hereinafter described.
11 is a frame work of rectangular form comprising members 12, 13, 14 and 15 secured to the bed plate by any suitable means as bolts indicated at 16, 16 and the parts of which are themselves secured together by any usual means as screws indicated at 17.
At a suitable place on the framework there is secured a chuck 18 by any suitable means as screws indicated at 19. In the preferred form shown this is made of a plate of angle iron with an upwardly extending web, but the precise form is immaterial provided it serves the purpose hereinafter described.
Hinged at any suitable place on the framework by a pivot indicated at 20 is an operating lever 21 provided at its opposite extremity in a handle 22. To the upper side of this lever and at a point near its pivot I and near the chuck 18 there is secured by any suitable means as screws 23 a chuck 21 comprising two angle irons faced in opposite directions and with a space or recess between them. The attaching means for the chuck to the lever are preferably so arranged that the chuck may be removed and secured at a new point if desired.
Secured to the operating lever 21 by a pivot 25 is a relatively short link 26 which in turn is provided with a chuck 27 resembling the chuck 2 1. The lever is provided with a number of holes. 28 by means of which the pivot 25 may be placed at any desired point along the lever so as to vary the point of attachment of the link 26.
29 is a link comprising two members secured together by a bolt and slot connection whereby its length may be varied and one of which members is provided with holes indicated at 30 to receive a pivot bolt 31 whereby it may be secured at one end to the framework 11. At its other .end it is secured to the link 26 by a pivot 32. l
The mode of using the device 1s as fol-.
lows: The rod to be bent indicated at 10 is placed in the chucks 18, 24; and 27 which are all in a straight line when the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 1. The operating lever is then swung around into the position shown in Fig. 2. As it moves the one end of the rod 40 is bent at a right angle by the relative movement of the chucks 18 and 24 around the pivot 20 as a common center and its other end is bent back at an acute angle by the rotation of the link 26 and chuck 27 on the pivot 25. This movement would form either half of the form shown in Fig. 5 or the left half of the form shown in Fig. 6. Supposing the half of the form shown in Fig. 5 to be the one made, the other half could then be formed making the form shown in Fig. 5 which is a usual form of stirrup used in reinforced concrete construction. I
If a second framework and operating lever is mounted alongside of the first one, as indicated in dotted outline in Figs. 1 and 2, a rod can be bent in two directions simultaneously, so that the stirrup illustrated in Fig. 5 may be completely made at one time.
Other forms as illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 are readily shaped by the use of the apparatus as will be readily apparent to a skilled workman.
The clutches are made of such a depth that a plurality of rods may be superimposed therein and bent simultaneously thus greatly economizing the time employed.
By varying the length of the link 29 and the position of the pivot 25, the relative positions oi the bend and their angular extent may be varied at the will of the operator.
What I claim as new is 1. Sending apparatus of the character described, comprising a support, a chuck mounted thereon, a member movably mounted on the support, a second chuck carried by the member adjacent to the first chuck, a third chuck movably mounted on the movable member and having a recessed seat for the reception of the article to be bent, and means for automatically moving the third chuck on the member and swinging it to dillerent angular relations with respect to the chuck on the support when the member is moved, to effect the bending of the portion of the article directly adjacent to the third chuck with relation to the portion engaged by the chuck that is mounted on the support and the second chuck.
2. In a device of the character described, a support, a permanent chuck mounted thereon, an operating lever pivoted to the support at one side of said chuck and provided in turn with a plurality of cooperating chucks, all of the chucks being in 'ti'night alinement when the lever is in one osition and one of the chucks being iingedly secured to the lever in combinaion with means for automatically oscillat ing it on its hinge to an angular position with respect to the other chucks when the lever is swung on its pivot.
8. in a device of the character described, a support, a permanent chuck mounted thereon or secured thereto, an operating lever pivoted to the support at one side of said chuck and provided in turn with a plurality of cooperating chucks, all of the chucks being in straight alinement when the lever is in one position and one of the chucks being hingedly secured to the lever in combination with means for moving it on its hinge to an angular position with respect to the other chucks, said means con sisting of a link hinged at one end to the support.
4:. In a device of the character described, a support, a permanent chuck mounted thereon or secured thereto, an operating lever pivoted to the support at one side of said chuck andprovided in turn with a plurality of cooperating chucks, all of the chucks being in straight alinement when the lever is in, one position and one of the chucks being hingedly secured to the lever in combination with means for automatically oscillating it on its hinge to an an gular position with respect to the other chucks when the lever is swung on its pivot consisting of a link hinged at one end to the support.
5. A device of the character described comprising means for bending a rod in two directions simultaneously by the single movement or an operating lever including a chuck against which a portion of the rod is adapted to rest, a chuck adapted to be swung in the same plane against which a second portion ofthe rod is adapted to rest, a chuck also adapted to be swung to an angular position with respect to both the first chucks and in the same plane against which a third portion of the rod is adapted to rest, and means for automatically moving the last chuck upon the movement of the lever.
6. A. device of the character set forth, comprising a support, a lever fulcrumed at one end to the support, work-holding chucks carried respectively by the support and lever contiguous to the fulcrum of the lat ter, a third chuck pivoted to the lever between its ends, and a link connection between the third chuck and the support, said lever having means at its free end, whereby it may be operated.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT C. WILSON.
