- STAY 0R STRUT FOR HINGED LIDS OF GRAMOPHONE AND OTHER CABINETS Filed Dec 15. 192 7 Patented Apr. 23, 1929.
UNITED STATES.
v1,710,570 PATENT OFFICE.
AUBREY LAWRENCE counts, or LONDON, ENGLAND.
STAY on s'rno'r FOR amen!) LIDS or ea'amornonn Annornna CABINETS. I
Application filed December 15, 1927, Serial No. 240,294, and in Great Britain January 25, 1927.
which is simple in construction quiet in action, and which does not require the cabinet to be cut to allow for fixing. Now according to the present invention I provide a stay or strut for hinged lids of gramophones and other cabinets, in which the said stay or strut is provided with a pivotally' mounted member or catch adapted to be positively rotated by co-operations With a plurality of cam surfaces or stops provided on or in connection with an oscillating plate or channel'with which the strut is adapted to co-operate.
In order that the present invention may be clearly understood and more readily carried into effect, it is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation illustrating the improved stay or strut applied to a gramophone cabinet and showing the lid thereof supported in a raised position thereby;
Figure 2 is an edge elevation of the improved strut;
Figure 3 is a strut;
Figure 4 is a detail vievfshowing the relative positions occupied by the parts of the front elevation of the said .mechanism when the lid of the cabinet is raised Figure 51s a similar detail View showing. the relative positions occupied by the parts of the mechanism when the strut is supportin the lid of the cabinet, as in Figure 1;
igure 6 is a further similar detail-view v showing the relative positions occupied by the parts of the mechanismwhenthe lid of the cabinet is raised prior to closing same; -.Figure 7 is a still further similar detail view showing the rel itive positions occupied by the parts of-the mechanism as the lid of the cabinet is being closed, and p Figure 8 is a substantially similar -view to Figure 7 showing the channel through which the, strut slides pivotally connected to and supported by a bracket and top plate in place of the side bracket shown in the preceding figures of the drawing.
. As shown and referring to theaccompanya ing drayvingait will be. seen that the imfixin plate is formed in two in two channels of a partly revolving pivoted plate 17 attached, as by a bracket plate 18, to the body of the cabinet-19. The pivot about which the plate 17 turns is indicated by the numeral 20. The two inturned edges 21 and 22 of the channelsof the plate 17 have, as shown, an irregular or cam formation; (lo-operatingv with the two irregular or cam formations I fit-to the other end of the strut 12 an elongated revolving member 23 which is substantially. the shape of a rhomboid. This member isheld friction tight by 'a suitable spring washer 24.
[In operation the movement to open and support the lid of the cabinet is as follows :-The lid 15 of the cabinet 19 is raised from a closed position, in which the part 23 of the mechanism assumes the position shown in Figures 3 and 8, up to itsfull extent till the parts assume the position shown in Figure'4 with the member 23 engaged at its upper end with the upper inturned edge portion 21. Then the lid is slightly lowered till the parts assume the position shown in Figures 1 and 5 with the member 23 restin at its lower pointed end against the shoul er of the inturned portion 22 and the upstanding portion 22 of the part 17. In this position the lid 15 of the cabinet 19 is supported b the strut 12. In
order to close the lid 0' the cabinet .it is necessary to again raise the lid to its full extent till thepart 23 is engaged by the part 21, as shown in Figure 6. Then the lid can be closed and on the downward movement the part 23 'will be turned round artly by contact with the shoulder 22 and then-by engagement with the inturned part 22, as indicated in a state of transition in Figure reverse the support or strut 12, the top end in this case being fixed to the cabinet 19 v andthe bottom fixed to the lid 15.
I 18 adaptedto be screwed to the inside of a cabinet I may employ a bracket of the It will be appreciated from the foregoing description that the operation of the strut is quite fool proof and I automatic in its action and that the revolving member or catch 23 partakes of a step-by-step anticlockwise movement, turningthrough 180 degrees for four strokes, constituting a complete cycle of operations, whilst the channel plate 17 merely oscillates about its pivot.
In some cases and in place of the bracket kind shown in Figure 8 having a fiat horizontal top plate 24Kadapted to be held by screws 25 to the motor board of the ma- 26, to. hold the chine and a depending wing plate or lug pivot 20 as will be readily understood.
What I claim is:- 1. A supporting strut for hinged lids of cabinets and the like, including a strut prop- .er connected to the lid, 2. plate supported on the cabinet and slidably receiving the strut, a member pivotally mounted on .the strut, and means on the plateto be engaged by said member in successive longitudinal movements of the strut, said means in one upward movement of the strut serving to position'the member for interlocking with the plate on the next downward movement to support the strut in elevated position, said means in thenext successive upward movement of the strut serving to position the -member to cause it to be rotated during an opposing movement of the strut to. a
position to free it with respect to the plate. 2. A strut for hinged lids of cabinets, including a strut proper connected to the lid,
" .a plate mounted on the cabinet and formed with spaced abutments, and a member pivoted on the strut and operative in successive movements of the strut to first cooperate with one abutment ofthe, plate for positioning the member for locln 'ng cooperation with the other abutment and then-,cooperate with the first abutment for positioning said memher to be rotated on further cooperation withthe second abutment. 1 v 3. A stayor strut for gramophonecabinets or the like, includingra strut connected to the lid of the cabinet, a member rotatably mounted on the strut, and a plate fixed to s1 the cabinet proper to slidably receive the strut, said plate having an upper abutment and a 'lower" stop, the member on the strut bemg formed to cooperate with the abutment and positioned for locking engagement with the stop to hold the strut in fixed' relation to the plate, the said member on sub-" sequent cooperation with the abutment being turned out of cooperative relation with the stop, the new relation of the member causing the stop to turn the member on its pivotal mounting without interfering with the movement of the strut.
4. A strut for gramophone lids, including a. strut proper secured to the lid, a plate se-. cured to the" gramophone cabinet, an abutthe plate below the abutment, and a member pivotally mounted on the strut, said member being formed to cooperate with the abutment in-the initial upward movement of ment carried 'onthe plate, a stop carried by thestrut', to move the member in position to cause one of its edges to engage withthe stop on the following limited downward' movement of the strut to hold'the strut against further downward movement, said member on the succeeding upward 'movement of the strut enga g-the abutment and being operated-throng said engagement to a position to'perinit it to be swung on its pivotal mounting in cooperation with the stop 'on the-ne xtfdownward movement of the strut.
5. A strut for. gramophone .lid s, inchrd-- ing a strut proper secured to the lid, a plate pivot-ally secured to .the gramophone cabinet, an abutment carried on the plate, a stop carried by the plate below the abutment,
and a member pivotally mounted on the strut, said member being formed to cooperate with the abutment in the initial upward.
movement of. the ;strut, to move the member in position to cause one of its edges to engage with the stop on the-following limited downward movement of the strut to hold the strut against. further downward movement, said member on the succeeding.
