TABLE TOI.
fippiicaaon flied May s, 1928'. serial No. 275,983;
The objectof the present invention is to provide a table top which shall closely resemble a solid glass or onyx or ,other stone top, but which may be very` cheaply manuf; factiired. 'lhe top not only resembles the solid glass and onyx tops but possesses their stru ral advantages as tor rigidity, Weight, pleasing appearance, etc.
The invention will be described with refio erence to the accompanying drawing, wliichl Figure l is aperspective view of an emf bodinient of the invention applied to a table;
Figure 21's a transverse sectionon the line 2 2, Figure l, and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal fragmentary section on the line 3 3, Figure 2.y Ilhe lop is forn'ied by pressing` a sheet metal plate into a fiat rectangular or other primary iiieii'iber Vl having flanges 2. Within ille structure thus formed and preferably extending lrai'isversely of the major length y of `the structure are disposer:L spaced tie-bars 3, which. bars are rigidly secured tothe flanges 2. For this purpose in the embodinient shown in the drawing, 'the flanges have Welded thereto rectangular clips 4 apertured to receive bolts 5 which pass through aperi'iires formed in 'the tie-bar,fin.eacli case, the belts being lireaded to receive nuts 6.` As an alternative, the tie-bars may be Welded to the clips 4l, orthey niay be formed at their ends with angular surfaces for direct Welding to the flanges. The structure is then Afilled with Portland cement composition, and
when the setting of thel composition is completed the expose surface 7 thereof niay be finished in any desiredvnianiieri I intermediate the ianges, as for example positions for flooring.
forni a porcelain or Prior to applying the cement composition upon the tie-bars 3 to aid in binding and reinforcing the cement.
sired. ln order to vary'the Weight of the structure, to the cement may be added suitable proportions of Wood flour or other light filler material asfcustomary in cement comy Either prior to or after filling the structure With the cement composition, the metallic surface is coated with a vitreous material which is preferably baked in situ so as to' glass-like external surface.'v f
yThe completed structure is solid,rigid, of greater strength than aglass or stone structure of the saine proportions and has closely similar appearance rWith a cost very substantially less. i Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by .Letters Patentv `is as follows y A i l. As a newV article of'inanufacture, a 65 table top comprising a sheet metal member having side flanges,the flanges being con- Ynested by a plurality of tie-bars, the space between `the flanges' being filled with a rigid, hard, ceinentitieus mate 1ial,fand the exposed 70 portions of the said metallic member and flangesbeing coated with a' vitreous inaterial. l
2. As afneiv article of manufacture, a table top comprising a metallic plate formed With marginal anges, clips Welded to the iianges, tie-bars secured to opposite clips, a ceinentitious material lilling tliespace intermediate the flanges and covering the tielbars, and a vitreous covering for the eX- i posed metallic surface of the structure. o
In testimony whereof, -I have signed my naine to this specification.
. v JOHN S. KONOP.
