UNIT D STATES PATENT oFFIoE..
FRANIQMOMURRAY SAWYER, OF CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA. MOLD FOR MOLDING .TILES AND SIMILAR ARTICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Application filed August 31. 1905- Serial No. 276.656.
To all whom it mag/concern:
Be it known that L'FRANK MoMURRAY SAWYER, a citizen of the United States, residcles; and I do declare the followingto be a,
full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates'to' im rovements in molds for simultaneously mol ing a plurality of cement or other composition tiles or other similararticles; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement-of devices'hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a mold embodying my Fig. 2 is partly a top plan a horizontal sectional view of a ortion of the mold. Fig. 3 is a longitudinahsectionalview of a portion'of the mold. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of another modified construction, and Fig. 8 is a detail top plan view of another modified construction. I
The mold-box may be of any suitable construction. It is here shown as comprising a bottom 1, side members 2, and cross-bars 3 at the ends of and detachably connecting said side members together. In between the pairs of the side members are placed a plurality of transverse mold pieces or blades 4, which are preferably made of sheet-steel or other metal, but may be made of any suitable material, and are bent or fashioned in Fig. same.
. the required shape of the tiles or other articles to be molded between said transverse mold-pieces and the said longitudinal or side pieces 2. The said transverse moldieces 4 are detachably secured between t eside mold-pieces 2 and are appropriately spaced, apart, according to the required thickness of the articles to be molded between them. To thus secure the transverse mold-piecesi in lace and permit of their ready detachment hour the bottom-and sides of the mold-box, I provide the bottom of the mold-box with notches 5 to receive the lower ends of the said transverse moldieces. The said notches may be either out in the bottom of the moldmg and appropriat able materia provided on their under box or they may be formed by strips 6 of the required size and shape placed on the bottom of the mold-box and between the transverse moldieces as the latter are placed in the moldox. I also rovide means for-secureIy spacing the up er ends of the said transverse mold-pieces. n Figs. .1, 2, and 3 I show such spacing means as composed of stri s 7 of sheet metal or other suitsides with notches 8 at an appropriate distance apart to receive the u per edges of the transverse mold-pieces. ny suitable number of these spacing and securing strips maybe employed. I
In Fig. 5 I- show a modified construction of the transverse mold-pieces, in which each of the said mold-pieces 9 is provided on one side near its upper end with studs 10 of suitable length. Said studs when a pluralityof transverse mold-pieces are assembled in the mold-box, as shown in Fig. 6, bear between the upper ends of the said transverse mold-pieces to maintain them at the required distance apart, and when the s aces between the mold-pieces are filled wit the.
cement or other plastic composition to form tiles or other molded articles said studs form nail-holes in the tiles or other molded articles, as will be understood;-
. In Fig. 7 I show another modified construction, in which I employ tile-securing strips 1 l of flexible sheet metal or other material. The lower end of each of the said securingstrips 11 is bent reversely a number of times, as at 12, andplaced between the up or ends of a pair of transverse mold-pieces, t e u per portion of the strip being disposed in aorizontal or substantially horizontal position and bearing on one of the said transverse mold-pieces, ,so as to support said strip in place. When the tile or ot er article is molded between said mold-pieces, the lower bent or fluted portion of the said strip becomes embedded permanentl in the molded articles, and the upper en of the said strip projects from the molded article and serves as a means for securing the same on a wall or roof by means of a nail driven through said projecting end of the strip.
In Fig. 8 I show a modified construction in which I em loy a horizontally-laid strip 13, having notc es in its edges to receive the uper e stead of the strips 7, hereinbefore described.
From the foregoing description, taken in projecting tapered.
ges of the transverse mold-pieces in-- connection with the accompanying drawings,
:the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this'invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claimas new,-and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A mold of. the character described coinprising a 1plurality of spaced-apart mold-sections eac of which is provided with a forwardly-projecting pin or plug locatednear one end thereof and contacting with the rear surface of thenext adjacent section, whereb said sections are pro erly spaced and nai holes formed in the ti es.
2.1 A mold of the character described comprisinga ,lurality of mold-sections each provided wit side flanges, supporting means for engagin said flanges, and independent means carried y each section for s acing said seci tions and also forming a ho e or. opening in the article to be cast.
3. A mold of the character described com prising a lurality of mold-sections each provided wit side flanges and a forwardly-projecting plug located between said flan es, and contacting with the rear surface of t e next adjacent section, whereb said sections are properly, spaced and nailoles formed in the In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
