IMPROVEMENT lN WATCH-CLEANING FLUIDS.
Specification forming part-of Letters Patent No. 171,035, dated December 14, 1875; application filed August 27, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTE MONNIER, of Sacramento city and county, State of California, have invented a Watch-Cleaning Fluid; and I do hereby declare the following description is sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention without further invention or experiment.
The object of my invention is to provide a compound for the cleansing of watches and other jewelry, or mechanism (which contains no silver) without the aid of a brush, or any friction with alcohol and chalk, or other substance, thereby preventing the wear which is usual in such cases, and cleansing much more perfectly, and with less time.
To form my cleansing-fluid I take the following ingredients: Distilled water, eleven ounces pure white castile-soap, three pennyweights; cyanide of potassium, fifteen grains.
As this compound will keep but a short time, I make it from time to time as needed,
and use it as soon as practicable.
Everything being in readiness, a sufficlent quantity, say half a pint, is placed in a small porcelain-lined iron vessel, and is heated to the liquid for one minute, the works are quickly removed, and plunged into a bath of distilled or rain water, where they are thorough- 1y rinsed. After this operation they are placed in an alcohol bath, and finally are thoroughly dried in boxwood sawdust.
A camels-hair brush may be used to remove any adhering particles of sawdust, when the parts will all be found much cleaner than when cleaned in any other manner, and a watch thus cleaned may safely be warranted for two years.
This fluid can be used for brightening and removing corrosion from steel, brass, or gold jewelry and other articles. It is of especial value in cleansing watches with nickel movements, and by its use the damaging wear of the ordinary methods of cleaning is avoided.
By its use a watch can be more thoroughly cleaned of rust, grease, and foreign substances in twenty minutes than can be done in two hours by ordinary processes.
