Description
PATENT OEEIoE.
JOHN G. FREDERICK, OF KAHOKIA, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOSITIONS FOR CLEANING WATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,958, dated July 16,1872.
To all whom it may concern:
I, JOHN GLARENoE FREDERICK, of Kahokia, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in Watch-Cleaning Fluid, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to clean watches without the usual injurious rubbing with whiting, 850., which wears the gilding from the works and takes time and labor to do it. The invention consists in preparing and using a fluid-bath, as hereinafter set forth.
The bath is made of these ingredients: Soft water, one pint; with alcohol, four fluid ounces; Oastile soap, one-tenth of an ounce; cyanide of potassium, one-half ounce, in the proportions given 5 the whole made into a solution, which may be kept closed from the air when not in use.
The movements of the watch are taken from the case and separated. The wheels are strung on a small wire or hair, and the large plates and bridges on another wire. The wheels are then put into the bath about one and a half minutes, the large plates and bridges about two minutes, to out and take up the dried oil, dirt, 8m. They are then taken out and well rinsed in soft water. and then dried in boxwood or other suitable sawdust. After drying they are brushed off with a soft brush. The works should not be left in the bath, when of this strength, longer than about as indicated.
Some variation could be made in the proportions without preventing the action, and other articles may be cleaned likewise.
I claim The watch-cleaning fluid formed of soft wa ter, alcohol, Oastile soap, and cyanide of potassium, substantially in the proportions set forth.
JOHN C. FREDERICK.
