JOSEPH S. FIELD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANISTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,006, dated December 14, 1875; application filed July 12, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. FIELD, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Canisters for tea, coffee, 850., of which the following is a specification:
My improved canister is made with two projecting buttresses in front--one at each side of the front-end between these is the vertical portion of the front and an inclined flap that swings upwardly. Said flap is between the buttresses when it is either turned up or down, so that its edges are protected by the buttresses, and risk of the flap being caught by the clothing or any passing article is avoided.

The canister is made with the bottom a, sides I), back 0, and top at, in which is an opening with a cover, 0, that allows for the canister to be filled. The front of the canister is made of the upper tablet f, swinging flap g, and bottom ledge h, against which the flap g closes, and the hinges of the flap at i are near the bottom of, and sufficiently removed from, the face of the tablet to allow the flap to lean against the tablet f when open and turned back. The buttresses l l at the side portions of the canister front are slightly inclined, and they project sufficiently beyond the edges of the flap g to form a protection to the same,
and the appearance of the canister front is also improved by these buttresses. The inclined septum m extendsfrom the lower part of the tablet f toward the back of the canister, leaving, however, a sufficient space for the tea, cofi'ee, spice, or other material in the canister to pass down beneath the septum, so that it can be taken up by an ordinary scoop inserted through the opening of the front when the flap is turned up out of the way. The ledge It prevents the material upon the bottom of the canister spilling out, and retains a sufficient quantity of such material below the septum for convenience in the use of the scoop.
In this canister, the flap, turning upwardly,
is entirelyout of the way of the scoop, and, when turned down, it occupies an inclined position, and rests at its edges upon the front portions of the can.
