Description

EILTYLER.
SPRING.
No'170973 Patented Dec.14, 1875.
UNTTED STATES PATENT (DEEICEc ERASTUS H. T YLER, OF MEDWAY, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l70,973, dated December 14, 1875; application led August 26, 1875.
To ad whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ERAsTUs H. TYLER, of Medway, in the county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have inventedacertain new and useful Improvement in Springs, of which the following is a description suficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled Vin the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an isometrical perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 an enlarged transverse section ofthe spring-Wire.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawing.
My invention relates to that class of springs which are designed more especially for use in spring-beds, car-seats, furniture, 85e. 5 and consists in an evolute spring having a fibrous coveringv connected to the body, and coated with a water-proof varnish, all as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
It is Well known that the springs ordinarily' employed in the construction of spring-beds, car-seats, furniture, &c., soon oXidize and injure the lining or substance to which they are attached, and also that they producea disagreeable noise by the coils comin g into contact as they are compressed in use.
My invention is designed to obviate these objections, and to that end I make use of means, which will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following description In the drawing, A represents a finished spring in position for use. The bodyBis composed of an elastic metallic wire coiled in the evolute form shown in Fig. 2, and coatedwith a coating of varnish or cement, C, outside of which is applied a covering of fibrous material, D, preferably composed of threads braided or wound as closely as possible, and in such a manner as to entirely protect the body B, the covering being caused to adhere to the body, and thus kept in place by means of the varnish or cement. The fibrous covering is varnished to render it water-proof, and protect it from dirt.
As a new article of manufacture, the evolute spring A, having the body B, provided with the fibrous covering D, secured to the same by means of the cement coating C, the fibrous covering being outwardly varnished with a Water-proof varnish, all substantially as set forth and specified.
