Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. REESSING, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANDLESTICKS FOR CHRISTMAS-TREES..
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,055, dated May 19, 1874; application filed,
Apri111, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern: y
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. REEssrNG, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved )andlestick for Christmas-Trees, of which the following is a specification My invention consists of a coil of wire to form a socket for the candle and an extension or prolongation from the bottoni of a staypiece to fasten the socket on a branch or limb of the tree, the said extension being bent so as to pass under the middle of the socket for the bottom of the candle to rest on, so as not to fall through.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved candlestick with a candle, and a branch over which it is supported, indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view ofthe Candlestick inverted.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Y
A represents a coil of wire, and B the eX- tension ofthe Wire from the bottom of the coil to fasten the candle on the branch C by coiling it around the branch a feW turns, as shown at D. E represents the arrangement of the piece B across the bottom of the coil, to .pre-
vent the candle from falling througln The wire will, by preference, be soft and pliable, so that it can be easily bent round the twig.
In adjusting the Candlestick on the tree, it will be contrived so that the bottom Will rest on the limb, and, if necessary to prevent the part D coiled around the limb from turning on it, a turn of the wire may be taken round a lateral branch.
It will be seen that by this construction a cheaper article can be made, and one that can be fastened more readily and securely than any other now in use.
I am aware that Wire coils have been used for candle-holders in candlesticks, and therefore restrict my claim to- A Candlestick for Christmas-trees, whereof the socket is composed of a coil, A, and the fastening device of a stem or projection, B, the latter being arranged to cross the space at the bottom of the coil, all substantially as shown and described.
GEORGEl WM. REESSING.
