MORRIS M. WERNER, OF ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
GARTER.
Application filed Apl'l 25, 1928. Serial NO. 272,752.
This invention relates to improvements in garters or similar flexible elastic articles having resilient attachment against the skin of the Wearer, and the invention has for its prineipal object the provision of a garter having an underlying strip adapted to protect the body of the Wearer from the elastic' port-ion of the garter band, so that the skin Will not be exposed to frictional contact With the elastic portion and in order to prevent deterioration of the elast-ic material owing to the heat and moisture of the skin. Other 1 objects reside in the novel Construction and arrangement of the garter elements hereinafter described.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which, Fig. l is a plan view of the improved garter; and Fig. 2 is a sectional detail taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The garter comprises the usual fabric pad 1 having a depending stocking fastener 2 of any desired Construction, a band adapted to incircle the leg and consisting of an elastic portion 3 and a non-elastic fabric portion l suitably connected as by seWing at the thickened seam 5, and a flexible protective strip 6 of leather, fabric or other appropriate material attached to, or integral With, the pad l. The strip 6 extends under the elastic portion. 3 and may have a loop 7 near its outer end through which the non-clastic fabric 4 may slide, to hold the strip 6 in proper position on the leg. The protective strip should be of such length that it Will underlie the elastic portion of the band When the elastic is fully extended, and the thickness of the seam 5 is preferably such that it cannot be pulled outwardly through the loop 7.
The pad may have the usual stud 8 upon which the free end of the band may be fastened by means of the loop or eye 9, but other types of clasps may be employed, if desired. The effective length of either or both portions of the leg` band may be adjusted by any usual means such as the sliders 10 to conform to the leg size of 'the Wearer. The various portions of the garter may be colored or decorated, as desired, to render the article attractivem A garter constructed as thus described is simple and economical to manufacture and unusually comfortable and durable in use; oWing to the provision of the protective pad 6 which prevents the elastic portion of the band from Contacting With the skin of the Wearer. The thickened seam 5 furnishes an effective stop or abutment adapted upon engagement With the loop 7 to limit the out- Ward movement of the band; consequently the elastic 3 cannot be unduly stretched,. nd cannot be pulled beyond the outer end f the protective pad to contact With the skin.
I claim:
A garter comprising a pad, a leg band consisting of an elastic portion having one end connected to said pad and a fabric portion attachedto the other end of the elastic portion, and a flexible, non-elastic strip fixed at one end to said pad and extending beneath said elastic portion, said strig having a loop near its outer end through which the fabric portion may slide, the flexible strip underlying said elastic portion in use, Whereby contact between the leg of the Wearerand the elastic is avoided, and a stop element formed at the juncture of said fabric and elastic portions adapted to engage said loop, thereby limiting stretching movement of the elastic port-ion.
In testimony Whereof I affix my Signature.
MORRIS M. VVERNER.
