Application filed December 14, 1922,7Seria1 No. 606382. Renewed June 23, 1926.
My invention relates to fastening means and more particularly to means whereby encircling .bands of fabric or other material, such as the cuffs of kniclrerboclrers, waist-bands, garters, belts and the like are detachably fixed in their encircling posi tion and has for its object to provide a novel and simple arrangement whereby the band will not only be efficiently secured in place but. in addition, will be automatically adjusted to properly t the part of the anatomy which it encircles. Other more specific objects'of the invention will appear from the description hereinafter and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings,V which show an example of the inventionV without defining its limits, Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a band of material in the form of a lrniclrerbocker cuff with the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an outer face view showing said band flattened out; Fig. 3 is an inner face view thereof with parts broken away and Fig. 41 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the finished band. v
For the purpose of illustrating and describing the invention l have shown the same in combination with a lrniclrerbocker cuff to which, by reason of its construction and operation, it is particularly adapted,V although it will be obvious that the' means is capable of being efficiently utilized in combination with any encircling band of .material where an automatic adjustment asto fit is desirable, such as waistbands7 garters, belts and the like. It will accordingly be understood that the illustrated knickerboclrer cuff is intended to be. representative .of all such encircling bands. v As shown the cud comprises the customary band of fabric 10 cut in the desired shape and provided at one end with a fastening device of predetermined characteristics and illustratedv in the form of a button hole 11. Near its other end and on a line with the fasteningv device or button hole 11 the band is provided with a slit 12 having closed ends and extending lengthwise of the band, said slit being located entirely between ,.ie ends of the band as shown in Fig. 2. fr fastening member of a type adapted for detachable connection with the fastening device 11 and in the illustrated example, comprising abutton 13 is located upon the Vouter surface of the band 10 in registry with the slit 12; the fastening member or button 13 is connected with a cord or other flexible loop 14 which extends inwardly through said slit 12 and in turn is attached to one end of an elastic tape 15. rlhe latter is located contiguous to the inner face of the band l0 and. has its other end secured thereto in any conventional manner as by sewing 16. v
With this arrangement the fastening member or button 13 is located upon the outer surface of the band and is adjustably connected therewith by means of the elastictape 15 which is located upon the inside of said band and the loop 141 which extends through the slit 12. 'lhe button 13 or its equivalent thus has a range of movement upon the outer face of the band and entirely within the confines thereof in the direction of its length while the elastic tape 15 which provides for the adjustability of the button 13 is entirely hidden from View; the loopV llla which is of relatively thinmaterial such as cord, moves lengthwise of the slit and because of its physical characteristics does not spread the same in a transverse direction to any appreciable extent. t
ln practice the end of the band 10 at which the button hole 11 or its equivalent is located is lapped over the other'end thereof and-the fastening member or specifically the button 13 is connected with the button hole 11. The elastic` tension exerted by the tape 15 upon the connected button and but ton hole or their equivalents automatically draws the band 10 about the part which it encircles, that is in the illustrated example draws the cuff 10 snugly about the leg to properly fit the same regardless of it-s dime.
sions. At the same time the tension exerted 9 by the tape 15 places the band or culi 1() under a tension which is sufiicient to prevent the slit 12 from spreading or gaping so that the loop 1s and also the tape 15 remain invisible from the front of the band regardless of the location and adjustment of the button 13 with respect to said slit 12.
ln some cases it may be desirable to provide a covering 17 of suitable material upon the inside of the hand 10 in registry with the slit 12 and preferably sewed in place as indicated at 18; the covering 1T may be extended to completely cover the tape 'l5 although it is sulicient in most` instances to simply locate said covering in registry with the slit 12. The covering 17 not only provides an attractive iinish upon the inside of the band 10 but also, by providing a backing as it were for the slit 12; reduces the possibility of the button 13 unintentionally passing backward through said slit.
The invention provides a fasteningA means ot extreme simplicity and etiiciency and whereby the band of whatever nature-it may be,ris automatically adjusted to lit the part which itv eneircl'es; this result is accomplished automatically by. the simple expedient of connecting the co-operatingf-astening devices and members with each` .otherI and requires no setting or adjusting of any of the. elements ot the combination. TheL invention is; particularly adaptedzfon use in connection! with ltniclterbocker cutis `and provides the desirable trimness and, per-V mits they use; oi buttons' and buttonA holes which characterize high class garments ot the kni'clerbocler type and are vmucln desired. At the same ti'methev invention ma; be used toV advantage in connection writi garters, waistbands, belts and thef like, it being understood that the fastening device and fastening member, as exemplifiedby the button hole 11 and button 13 are always of aV type predetermined by the' character ot the band 10 andthe usel tolwhich itis to be put. ln addition the arrangement is such that no' part of the 'fastening means of the invention contacts with the person of the wearer,- which is a desirable feature particularly inI the: case; of garters,
Various changes in the specific Jform shown and described may bemade within the scope of the claims withoutf departing from the. spirit of the invention.
I claim:
