My invention relates to an apparel garment and more particularly to undergarments such as brassieres, vests, overslips and the and similar garments it is'customary toemploy shoulder straps for maintaining'or assisting in maintaining the garment in position on the body of the wearer.

In garments, however, in which shoulder straps are employed it is more or less common experience that considerable difficulty is found in maintaining the shoulder straps in position as they have a more or less persistent tendency in slipping off the shoulders and down over the arms of the wearer. This is because of the manner in which these shoulder straps have usually been attached to the garment. Ordinarily, the shoulder straps are attached at one end to the upper front portions of the garment and at the back in separate and spaced positions to or adjacent the upper edge of the garment, each shoulder strap being entirely independent of theother.

The object of my invention is to overcome this difficulty and in so doing the shoulder straps attached to'the garment are fixed in the usual manner at the upper front edges thereof, but are so arranged as to be attached at a single point or place, preferably in a central position at the rear of the garment and also to cross each other at the back so of the shoulder strap to slip off the shoul er is obviated. In carrying out the invention the shoulder strap may be made of a single piece of tape and connected at its ends to the upper front portions of the garment, while at the back it is threaded through a loop or suitable attachment to which it is preferably secured after the parts of the strap are made to cross each other, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.

I lave illustrated my invention as applicable to a brassiere or bust supporter, but as hereinbefore stated, it is not limited to use 1n this particular t pe of garment. The garment as illustrate however, is made to include a right hand member 10 and a left hand member 11. These members are preferably, connected at the front of the garment by a line of stitches 12 and in suitable positions these members as illustrated are made with darts 13 and'14.- in the left hand member, and 15 and 16 in the right hand member to cause the garment to conform to the busts. ,The garment is adapted to extend'around the body and at the extremity of the left hand member there is a reinforcing strip 17 to whlch is connected an elastic strap 18 having a reinforcing member 19 at the extremity thereof. The reinforcing member 19 is fitted with suitable eyelets'20. At the extremity of the right hand member 10 there is a' reinforcing member 21 fitted with hooks 22. The hooks 22 are adapted to engage the eyes 20 so as-to close the garment in position around wearer, and as will be understood, by the use of the elastic strap 18 the garment is yieldingly maintained in place. The edges of the garment may also be suitably reinforced, as for example the upper edge may be provided with a binding 23 and the lower edge with a binding 24. These parts of the garment, however, as shown and described, are merely illustrative of a garment in which the invention may be employed.

lustrated, the shoulder straps are indicated at 25 and 26 and are preferably a single tape of silk or linen or any other suitable material. At the ends this tape is secured to theupper front edge of the garment in the customary manner after the tape is threaded through a loop 27, which, as illustrated, is connected at one end to' the elastic strap 18 by lines of stitches 28. Also as illustrated, the shoulder strap tape is preferably fixed in position in the loop by a line of stitches 29 or otherwise, and of course, it will be understood that the tape comprising the shoulder strap maybe permitted to slide through the loop so that the straps insome instances may automatically adjust themselves to position. It will be furthermore' understood, that as illustrated, this tape is crossed at the back as indicated at after having been threaded through the loop and before the ends are connected to the upper front edges of the garment. It will also be understood that in use the point at which the tapes cross is immediately above the point of attachment to the loop, and also that the attachment of the tape forming the shoulder straps may be made in any equivalent man-.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a garment of the type described, a body member adapted to surround the body of the wearer, a shoulder strap attachment of appreciable width secured to the body memher at the rear thereof, and a unitary strap adapted to function as shoulder straps, the said unitary strap passing freely through the of thehody member,

said shoulder strap attachment on a line substantially circumferential of the garment and having the parts thereof cross at the back with the right hand portion as it leaves the said attachment connected atits extremity with the upper left front portion of the body member, and the left hand port-ion of the said unitary member as it leaves the said attachment connected at its extremity to the upper right hand portion of the body member.

2. In a garment of the type described, a body memberadapted to extend around the wearer and to function as a bust supporter,

an elastic strap attached at one end to one end of the body member, means for connecting the otherend of the elastic strap to the other end A a shoulder strap attacln ment of an appreciable width connected to and extending upwardly from the said elastic strap, and a single tape adapted to function as shoulder straps, the said tape passing freely through the said shoulder strap attachment on a line substantially circumferential of the garment and with the parts thereof crossing at the back, and the right hand portion of the tape as it leaves the shoulder strap attachment connected at its extremity to the upper left front portion of the body of the garment and the left hand port-ion of the tape as it leaves the shoulder strap attachment connected at its extremity to the upper right front portion of the body of the garment.
