COMBINATION PILLOW AND VANITY CASE.
Application filed March 5, 1927. Serial No, 173,089,
This invention relates to combination pillows and vanity cases.
An object of the invention is to provide a pillow having a stuffed body portion of peculiar oblate conformation, adapted to be used in connection with divans, porch benches or swings, automobile seats and the like, and in which one flattened. end portion is provided with a compartment closed by a padded cover, which in position is concealed due to the shape of the pillow, said compartment enclosing various articles which usually compose the contents of a vanity case, such as powder and rouge boxes, perfume bottles, lip stick and the like, and the inner surface of the cover being provided with a mirror, all of said articles except the mirror being secured to the pillow proper, and being concealed and held in position without danger of breakage when the pillow is in use, by the soft contacting surfaces of the cover and the body of the pillow. I
Other and further objects of the invention will more clearly appear from the description and claims hereinafter following.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the pillow forming the subject matter of this invention. Figure 2 is an end view of the pillow showing the detachable cover and means for holding the same in closed position. And Figure 3 is an end view of the pillow similar to Figure 2 showing the cover in open position to disclose the compartment in the end of the pillow and the manner of mounting various articles therein. 7
As shown in the drawings, the invent-ion comprises a body portion 5 made up of a plurality of longitudinally extending sections 66 of satin, or other suitable material, which are sewed together along their longitudinal edges as indicated at 7. At one end the pillow is provided with an inset 8 which is sewed directly to .the ends of the sections 6 6 as indicated at 9. Secured about the end of the pillow adjacent the inset 8, is a ring-like member 10 made up of suitable material, in this instance a strip of braid, being arranged in circular form and having its inner edge only secured to the pillow proper as indicated at 11.
The opposite end of the pillow is also provided with an inset indicated at 12, and this end of the pillow also is provided with a ringlike member 13 similar to the member 10, which in conjunction with the inset 12 forms a circular chamber 14, adapted for the reception of a circular stuffed ,flap or cover 15 which fits-within the ring 13and has its edge sewed thereto at one point asindicated at 16, whereby the flap may be swung to open and closed positions as on a hinge. Means are provided for holding the flap or cover closed, said means including a plurality of straps 17, each having a snap 18 adapted to engage with a snap 19 secured to one of the straps 20 se cured to the inner surface of the ring 13, the arrangement being such that the straps may be pulled to disconnect the snap fasteners to open the cover or flap 15. V
Mounted cent-rally upon the under surface of the flap 15 is a circular mirror 21, said mirror being surrounded by a frame 22 which is secured to a circular piece of material 23 by glue or the like, the marginal edges of the material 23 being sewed to the cover 15 as indicated at 24.
Mounted in the compartment 14, defined by the ring 13, and the adjacent end of the pillow proper, is a box 25 containing powder, said box being glued to a circular piece of material 26 which is sewed to theend of the pillow proper as indicated at 27. At the opposite side of the compartment 14 is a box 28 containing rouge which is secured to the end of the pillow proper, the same as box 25. A lip stick 29 is secured in the compartment 14 by a looped member 30 which is sewed to the pillow proper at a point adjacent the hinged edge of the flap 15. A bottle 31, containing perfume, is secured in the compartment by a loop 32 adjacent the central strap 20. Theboxes 25 and 28 and the members 29 and 31 are so arranged in the compartment as to leave a space in the center thereof as indicated at 33, so that when the flap 15 is closed the mirror 21 bears against the soft end portion of the'pillow proper, while the other articles bear upon the flap at points out of line with the mirror 21.
By the above described arrangement, a soft stuffed pillow of substantially oblate form is provided, adapting the pillow to be readily carried about, to be placed into positions ordinarily inaccessible to the usual types, and which contains articles ordinarily forming the contents of vanity cases in such manner that the same are concealed, but readily ac-- cessible, and so arranged as to permit the use of the pillow in the normal way, as the various articles are cushioned between the soft layers of material comprising the end of thepillow proper and the stulfed cover, the shape of the pillow being, such that the presence of the compartment is not noticeable as the flap forms the end of the pillow in the peculiar formation of the pillow, the same normally lies upon its side, and when weight is IIDPOSGCl HPOIl the pillow, it usually will be at a point midway between the ends and not at either end, thus further protecting the contcntsof the compartmentlocated at one end of the pillow.
While I have herein shown and described what I consider the preferred manner of carrying out the invention, the same is merely illustrative, and I contemplate all changes and 'modilications which come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. A combination pillow and vanity case, comprising a stuffed body of oblate conforination, the opposite ends of which are pro- Vided with rings secured at the inner edges and projecting outwardly from the body por tion, one or which in conjunction with the body portion of the pillow provides a coinpartn'ient; and a stuffed removable cover fitting into and closing said compartment, said compartment and cover being provided with means for supporting articles of a breakable nature in said compartment so as to be disposed out of line with each other, whereby said articles bear upon the stuffed portions of the body proper and of the cover when the latter is closed. v
2. A pillow, comprising a stufied body portion 01' oblate formation, said stuii'ing extending continuously from one end to a point adjacent the opposite end, said opposite end having means providing a compartment; and a removable stuil'ed cover closing said coinpartment and concealing the same.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 1st day of March, 1927. v
