ACCOUNT BOOK.
Application filed December 22, 1926. Serial No. 156,486.
The present invention relates to improve-V ments in account books and has for its primary object to provide a structure which may be embodied in bound as Well as loose-leaf books to providea convenient index.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an index for books embodying removable index strips whereby the indexing of the leaves maybe conveniently'changed.
Another object of the invention is the pro* vision of an index construction of the above character which is simple of construction, efiicient for the purpose intended and 'Which can be manufactured at a relatively low cost.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description progresses.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts of the same:
Figure 1 is a plan vieiv of a book constructed according to my invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 2Q of Figure 1,
Figure B is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of a book constructed in accordance with my invention, and y Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on the line lf-t of Figure 1.
Referring tothe drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1() designates the front cover board of a conventional type of book arranged in opposed position to a book cover board 11. These cover boards are preferably formed of rigid material suoli as cardboard. Secured between the front and rear cover boards are a plurality of paper sheets 12, in the present embodiment these sheetsbeingruled vertic ally,to define columns, as indicated at 13. The cover boards and sheets are preferably formed with perforations 14 near one vertical edge to accommodate snap fasteners 15 or other removable fastenings, thus providing a binder of substantially loose-leaf construction permitting replacement of the sheets when desirable.
As clearlyshown in Figure 2, the ruled blank paper sheets 12 terminate considerably below the upper edges of the front and rear cover boards 10 and 11, for a purpose which Will become apparent as the description progresses.A
The essential feature of my present invention resides in the provision of a division sheet or board 15 preferably of heavier construction than the usual Writing sheet and similar in marginal contour to the formation ofthe front and back cover boards. AFrom this construction, it will be apparent that the upper longitudinal edge of the division sheet Y 15 will be parallel with the upper edges of the front and back cover boards. A series of spaced perforations 16 are formed adjacent the upper edge of the sheet 15 as indicated in Figure 3. y
Formed so as to be positioned against each side of the divider sheet 15 adjacent the upper edge are index strips 17 of paper or any other suitable material and having openings 18 which register with the openings 16 in the division sheet. The index strips 17 are marked with vertical lines 19 adapted to extend in 'vertical alignment with the lines 1375 of the ruled sheets 12. Suitable designations are marked onthe index strips 17 in longitudinal positionbetween the lines 19 so as to form designation headings above the columns of the blank sheets.
The index strips are secured in position on the division sheet by means of a longitudinal clip member 2O preferably formed `of celluloid or'similar transparent material and extending the entire length of the upper edge of the division sheet to overlap the index strips, the yclip member 20 being U-shaped in cross-section and fitted over the Upper edge of the division sheet and the index strips 17 andV formed With transversely alined openings 21 adapted to register with the openings 18 formed in the index strips. The clip member 20 is preferably of resilient construction so as to normally retain the index strips 17 tightly against the faces of the division sheet, the said clip member and index strips being secured in position by suitable snap Vfasteners. Thisk will permit convenient removal and replacement of the index strips 17 to vary the index headings when necessary.
While my improved index structure has been illustrated in application upon a detachable form of binder it is readily apparent that thev same may be effectively employed upon permanentlyrbound volumes as Well as loose leaf binders and any number of Vdivision sheets may be employed in each'volume. This structure presents a replaceable index 'of a durable nature designed to obviate the mutilation of the index headings by the customary use of the book. Furthermore, the index headings will be protected from mutilation and soilin by the provision of the clip member whic entirely covers the index strips. Y
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same and that various changes as to the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims. Y
Having thus describedl my invention, I claim: Y
l. A book of the character described'comprising front and back cover boards, a plurality of sheets secured at one of their side edges between the cover boards, a division sheet disposed between certain of the irst` mentioned sheets, and an index strip removably secured to the upper marginal portion of said division sheet. Y
2. A book of the character described comprising :tront and back cover boards, a plurality of blank sheets retained at one of their side edges between the cover boards, a division sheet disposedV and retained between certain of the blank sheets, and index strips, removably mounted on the upper marginal portion of said division sheet.
3. An account book comprising front and back cover boards, a plurality or" blank sheets secured at one of their side edges between the cover boards, a division sheet' disposed between certain of the blanksheets and having its upper margin projecting beyond the upper edges ot the latter, and index strips removably secured to the upper projecting margin oi the division sheet.
4. In an account book, in combination, a binder including a front and a back cover board, a plurality of blank sheets secured at one of their side edges between the cover boards, an index including a division sheet disposedand retained between certain of the blank sheets, index strips upon the upper edge portion of the division sheet, and a transparent clip member removably fitted over and confining the index strips and the said edge ofthe .division sheet.
5. In an account book, in combination, a binder including affront cover board, a back cover board, a plurality of blank sheets secured between the cover boards, an index including a division sheet secured between certain of the blank sheets and having one edge projecting beyond the corresponding'edges of the blank sheets, a pair of index strips disposed against oppositesides'of the projecting edge of the division sheet, a clip member embracing the index strips and the said edge of the division sheet, and separable fasteners exten ding through the clip member. the index strips, and the .division sheet and detachably connecting the clip member in position.
6. ln an account book, front and back cover boards, a division sheet arranged between the same and constituting means for separating, into groups, blank record sheets arranged between the cover boards, fasteners removably fitted through the said cover boards and divisionv sheet for connecting the same in assembled relation and constituting, also, means for removably retaining blank record sheets, an index strip disposed against one marginal portion ot the division sheet, and means ren'iovabiy securing the index strip to said mar? ginal portion of said division sheet.
In testimony whereof he has affixed his signature.
