Description

FENCE.
Patented Dec. 7,1875.

UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. COUCH, OF HANNIBAL, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 170,714, dated December 7, 1875; application filed August 28, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. 001701;, of Hannibal, in the county of Marion and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Fence, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of the fence, and Fig. 2 a side view of the same folded, the post or batten having been detached.
The invention is an improvement in the class of portable fences; and relates particularly to the construction and application of a detachable batten to the panels of the fence, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A denotes the panels, which are each composed of parallel rails B, and vertical end barsG applied on opposite sides. The rails are interlocked, Fig. 1, so that the fence may be compactly folded, as shown in Fig. 2.
It is, however, necessary that the panels have no batten or middle post permanently attached, else they cannot be thus folded into small space. To this end I construct the batten of a straight bar, D, and pivot short pieces D thereto at such distance apart as will allow them to pass between the rails B when turned parallel thereto, and on being then turned onequarter round will lie across the edges of adjacent rails, as shown, thus firmly locking the batten to the panels, and imparting the desired stiffness and rigidity to the panel.
When the fence is to be folded, the battens may be readily detached by simply turning the pieces or buttons D to a position parallel to the rails.
I do not claim, broadly, a fence provided with a removable post or batten; but
I claim- In' combination with the interlocked railpanels A of the folding fence, the detachable batten composed of the bar D and pivoted buttons D, as shown and described, to operate as specified.
' WILLIAM A. COUCH.
