P. a. smart BURIAL cAslm Filed Dec. 15, 1988 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 12, 1929.
u r sr EE mane 'IPATBICK D. SKAHEN, 0F SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
IBURIAL CASKET.
Application filed December 15, 1928. Serial No. 326,183.
' on line 22, Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the lock or latch for securing the hous ng on the base.
This burial case comprises generally a sheet metal base having an upturned mar ginal flange around the same, a box like housing open at its lower side mounted on the base and spaced apart from said flange forming a channel for receiving a sealing medium as cement, the housing preferably having an outwardly extending base flange which spaces it from the former flanges and which forms the bottom of the channel.
The invention also preferably includes latching means for securing the housing to the base, said latching means being located in the channel in position to be embedded in the cement or other sealing medium.
1 designates the base which is formed of sheet metal with an upwardly extending marginal flange 2 preferably extending entirely around the base 1 so that the base is in the form of a shallow pan.
3 designates the box like housing mounted on the-base, the housing being open at its lower side and formed with an outwardly extending marginal flange 4: at its lower edge, the housing being arranged with its lower margin spaced apart from the flange 2 and thereby forming a channel 5. The flanges 4 are arranged to form the bottom of the channel.
W hen a sealing medium is filled into the channel the housing and the base are securely and hermetically sealed. The housing 3 is formed of sheet metal and comprises, top, side and end Walls, each side wall and one portion or the corresponding half of the top are preferably formed as a unit of metal and the top sections or halves have upwardly extending abutting flanges 6 which are secured together as by spot welding. 7 Q
The end walls 7 are inset and formed with outwardly extending marginal flanges 8 forming channels 9 along the ends of the case' correspondingto the channels 5. The flanges of the end walls 7 along the lower r We 7 edges thereof correspond to the flanges 4:"
of the side walls of the housing 8. The flang s 8 of the end walls are secured to the margins of the side. walls and tops in any sultable manner as spot welding.
Means is provided for securing the housing to the base so that the case can be transported before being sealed to. the place of burial.
This latching means is preferably located I in the channel 5. As here shown, it inchides a pluralityof latches, each of which includes a flange or shelf 10 extending laterally from the side walls of the housing, a keeper 11 overhanging one end of the flange or shelf 10, a latch member 12 pivoted on a vertical axis at 13 near the other end of the shelf and being arranged to swing under the keeper 11 and a movable lug 14 secured to the base 1 or the flange 2 thereof and movable onto the shelf 10 intoa position to be under the latch 12 when it is swung into engagement with the keeper plate 11. The flange or shelf 10 is one side of an angle iron which is secured to the lower margin of the side walls of the houslng as by rivets 15. The keeper ll'has a base flange 16 between. the angle iron and the side walls of the housings, suitable handles 17 are provided on the heusingJ In operation, the housing and the base can be temporarily secured together for the purpose of transporting it and the housing removed for the purpose of replacing the casket on the base 1. After the casket has been placed on the base 1, the housing is placed on the base and-the parts permanently secured and sealed together. The subject matter of this invention is substantially the same as that of applicants prior application Sr. No. 43,724 filed July '15, 1925, allowed October 31, 1927 and forfeited and not renewed.
What I claim is:
1. A burial casket comprising a base flange, upright walls of the housing having outwardly extending spacing flanges at their loweredges,'the first mentioned flanges with the lower margins of the upright walls of the housing forminga channel for receiving a sealing medium and latching means associated with the base and the housing and located within the channel, said latching ieans comprising a horizontal shelf fixed to the housing and extending laterally therefrom, a keeper overhanging one end of the shelf, a latch pivoted to the plate near its other end on an upright axis and movable under the keeper, and a movable lug secured to the base and movable over the plate in position to be between the plate and the latch when the latch is engaged with the keeper.
2. A burial casket comprising a base plate and a box like housing on the base plate, the housing being open at its lower side and comprising side," top and end walls, the top being formed in sections and each section being a unit with one of the side walls and the top sections having abutting flanges secured together, the end wall being formed with an angular marginal flange and being inset with said flanges confronting the margins oi the side walls and the margins of the topwalls and secured thereto.
3. The casket of claim 2 in which the base is formed with an upturned marginal flange around the same forming a channel with the lower margin of the housing for receiving a sealing medium, the side walls having outwardly extending, base flanges" of Onondaga, and in the State of New York,
this 13th day of December, 1928.
