"LOCKER com any, or CHICAGO, ILL
INOIS, A CORPORATION or .ILL noIs;
' SHELF BOX.
Application filed July 26, 1920. Serial No. 398,999.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, lVALTER N. VANCE, "a Citizen oftheUnited States, residing in ChicagoHeights, in the county of Cook and-State of Illinois, :have' invented a new and useful Improvement in Shelf Boxes, of which the following is a. specification. i This inventionrelate'sin general to boxes and has more particular referenceto metal boxes constructed for'use as shelf boxes and for'similar purposes.
The principal object 'of the present invention is the provision of ametal shelf box wherein partitions may be easily and quicle 1y inserted orassembled in a locked .position and removed and this without the provision of special" locking membersor parts provided upon the box orupon the partition. "Another important object of the invention is the provision of such a construction in which the partition or partitions when in I position will be positively and firmly pressed down against the box bottom to prevent small articles passing beneath or engaging beneath the partition. 9 I
Another important object of the invention is "the effectuation of certain improvements in boxconstruction as will be later apparent as theinvention is more fully described.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of novel and improved label holding means and this without the addition of any'parts or members for the purpose.
Anotherand highly important object of r the invention is the provision of a handholdof new and improved construction and arrangement with respect to the box of which it forms a part.
1 Numerous other objects of the invention will: be apparent as it is better understood from the followingdescription which taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawing discloses a preferred embodiment thereof: I
Referring to the drawing, I Figure 1 is'aperspective view of ashelf box embodying mypresent invention; I Fig. 2 is a similarview of -the partition;
is aflsection taken longitudinally through such shelf box;
Fig] 4: is a section on the line 44 of Fig. Sis-an end elevation thereof; and
Fig. "6 is an enlarged detail of the notch or recess construction provided in'thepres' ent instance in the side flanges.
The box shown on the drawing is of the character of that described and'claimed in my application Serial N 0. 301,985 filed June 5, 1919, for metal boxes and in some respects"- the present invention constitutes improvements thereupon. I
For the purpose of illustrating my present invention I have shown on the drawing in Fig. 1 a sheet metal shelf boxcomprising side walls 11, front end wall 12, rear end wall 13 and bottom wall 14. wThe side and bottom walls are formedof a single' sheet of metal bent on lines of bend 15 into the boxxform shown. The side walls are provided with'end flaps or flanges "16 and the bottom wall with end flaps or flanges 17. These flanges are folded over onto-the outer faces of the end wallsiand are mitred at 18 at adjacent ends. The extremities-of the flanges 16 at the front are oflset at 19 to provide outer label holding parts 21 which provide channels 22 between themselves and the front wall 12 into which a label may be inserted. The-side flanges 16 back of the offset parts 19 are secured as by welding, spot welding or otherwise to the outer face of the front wall 12. The central part 23 of the front bottom flange 1-7 near the line of bend between this flange and the bottom body is offset as at 24, and the extremity 25 of the flange is also offset and in the plane of the part23. The end parts of the flange 17 are not offset and ar'efastened in suitable fashion to the end wall. The offset part 23 is provided'with one or more apertures 26 extendingthrough it. This aperture or apertures provides a 'recess or recessesfor retaining a hand-hold27 side Walls.
on an enlarged scale in Fig. 6 from which it will be noted that each recess comprises a portion 44 deeper than the rest and a second portion 45 smaller and shallower than the portion 44, said portions 44 and 45 being connected by an inclined surface or cam 46, the purpose of which recesses will be more apparent presently.
,,One or more partitions indicated at 4T are provided and each consists of a metal sheet having side flanges 48 and a bottom flange 49 extending out at right angles to the plane of the partition. The adjoining edges of the bottom and side flanges are cut away at 51 to fit over the protuberances 41 as will be presently described. At the top the partition is bent to provide around or curved edge 52 the top of which is preferably located at or about the top of the flanges 48.
This partition is adaptedto be assembled by inserting it'within the box and tilting it to bring the curled edge 52 into the larger portions 44 of opposite recesses 43. It is then swung down about the upper edge as a pivotal axis to bring the recesses'or opens ings 51 in the side andbottom flanges over and in registration with the projections or protuberances .41 already mentioned and located just beneath the recesses 43 in which partition.
moved tiltingly or pivotally about its bot-' the partition is engaged. The partition is then moved vertically downwardly to en gage such protuberances in the recesses 51 to form a bottom holding means for the Thereafter the partition is tom edge the upper edge of the partition sliding over the cam or incline and springing into the portions 45 of the recesses.
' The side of the recess forming a retaining shoulder forlocking the partition inup right position. Thus arranged the overhanging flanges 42 are disposed on the outside of the upper ends of the side flanges 48 of the partition. It is thought that the in- 60 vention and many of its attendant advantages Will be better understood from the foregoing description and it Will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts withoutdeparting from the spirit One of these recesses is shownand scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof. I claim:
1. A box and partition therefor, said box comprising partition holding meansiat the top and bottom and said partition being of unitary construction adapted to be tilted alternately about its opposite edges in being positioned.
2. A box and partition therefor, said box comprising partition holding means at the top and bottom and said partition being adaptedtobe tilted alternately about its opposite edges in being positioned, and said partition and said means having cam surfaces 1nterengaged during the positloning of said partition.

- 4. A box and partition therefor, said box a comprising holding means engaging the partition whenthe partition is in position'in said box, said holding means comprising an inclined cam surface. and a stop shoulder and said partition sliding overthe camsurface and into position behind the stop shoulder in assembling. a 1 I 5. A box and partition therefor,said box comprising holding means engaging thepartition when the partition is in position in said box, said holding means comprising a flxedlatch past which the partition is permitted to move by reason of the resiliency of the parts'into assembled and secured po-. sition. I I 1 6. A box and partition therefor, said box" having parts for engaging the bottom of the partition and overhanging flanges provided witlrcam recesses at the top for engaging the top of said partition said parts and recesses having fixed position and being adapt: ed to permit positioning of said partition.
