UNITED STATES PATENT QFFTC JAMES P. RICHARDS, OF NETAWAKA, KANSAS.
BROODER-COOP FOR CHICKENS, &c.
To aZZ 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES I. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, resident of Netawaka, in the county of Jackson and State of Kansas, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Brooder-,Coops for Chicks, &c.; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description 0f the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of the coop.
invention. Fig. 2 is a central transverse vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bottom piece. Fig. 4 illustrates the sections of the blank in plan view. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the ventilator disk. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the latch device.
The invention relates to brooders for chicks and the like, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of palts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a, designates the brooder, having a square base a, and the major part of which is formed of a single sheet of metal, preferably sheet steel, the blank being shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings and being of general oblong rectangular shape having short slits Z), b, in line and extending inward and toward each other from the centers of the longer sides a?, a2. At each side of these slits the blank is notched at c, c, and beyond these notches are short slits (Z, (Z, which also are in line and extend toward each other from the longer sides of the rectangular blank.
The blank is bent centrally upon line frc, joining the slits Z), to form the top ridge of the brooder case, and each half of the blank is again bent in the same direction upon the line g/-g/, joining the slits (Z, CZ, at each side of the center. These bends are both obtuse angles as shown at c, and f, f, and form the sloping top c., and side walls f', f, of the case, the two ends of which are formed by bending the blank upon the lines g-g, which extend from the inner ends of the central slits Z), Z), to the inner ends of the shorter slits (Z, CZ, and to the ends of the blank, these lilies g-g diverging from the center toward the ends of the Specification of Letters Patent.

blank and the bends so formed being also obtuse angles, that is to say the tongues Zi, Zz., at each side of the blank, bounded on one side by one of the slits Z), and on the other side by an edge of one of the notches c, and the tongues c', z', at each side of the blank bounded on one side by one of the slits (Z, and on the other side by the other edge of one of the notches c, are both bent downward at the same obtuse angle on the line g, the tongues Zz, ZL, lapping and being secured together by the rivets L, ZL, and the longer edges of the two notches c, at each side of the blank being .in line horizontally or substantially so, as shown. Thus when the tongues y', j, at each side of the blank, bound ed on one side by one of the slits (Z, and on the other side by the end of the blank, are bent inward toward each other upon the line (/-Lf/, at right angles or until they arrive in the plane of the other tongues Zz., ZL, and lZ, z', referred to, the bending of the blank proper is finished, it only remaining to insert a trapezoidal piece of sheet metal Z1?, at each side to finish the incomplete walls. This sheet metal piece Zc,'is inserted at the top thereof within and above the tongues Zz., Z1., and i, z', in the same plane thereas, the tongues j, being bent under or within the tongues fi, and the tongues z', c', j, j, and, the sheet metal piece Z, being secured together by rivets Z, Z, a single rivet Z, being sufficient as a rule to unite these three parts at each case corner.
The outer corner j, of each tongue j, is bent upward over the lower corners of the trapezoidal pieces Ze', Zc, to secure the same in place.
One of the sheet metal pieces j, is formed with upper and lower bends Z, forming guideways for a sliding door Z2, arranged to close a doorway Z3, in such piece.
In order to provide ventilation when needed, perforations m, m, are formed in the lapping tongues Z1., Zz, a circular piece of sheet metal n, pivoted at n, and having perforations n?, n?, being arranged to close or open such perforations m, m, into the brooder case as required.
A square bottom 0, is provided for the brooder, such bottom being formed either of sheet metal or wood and having a rabbeted or downward bent marginal portion or shoulder 0, over which fits the brooder case, a raised platform 02, and a bottom air space 03, below said platform and within and bounded by said shoulder, downward and outward eX- tending lugs p, y), of said case which rests upon a marginal flange o4, of the base engaging slots or seats p, 7X, of said bottom, at one side, and a pivoted latch device Q, of the case engaging a slot or seat g, of the bottom and turning under the edge of the seat Q, to removably secure the parts together.
The complete case has sloping top or roof walls e, e', meeting at an obtuse angle at the central ridge e, sloping side walls f', f, intersecting the roof walls at obtuse angles f, j', and sloping end walls f2, f2, formed by the lapping tongues and trapezoidal pieces, the whole having a square base, and the corners of the interior having obtuse angles.
In my brooder invention there are no seams to leak or solder to become loose; the tapering form allows the cases to be readily and closely packed together for shipping or storing; a water tight case is provided which is vermin proof, thereby producing strong, healthy chicks; the broeder case may be conveniently opened or the bottom separated therefrom and the parts easily cleaned owing to the absence of narrow corners. At the same time a strong sliding door is provided, the case can be easily ventilated, and the brooder cases manufactured and put on the marketat small cost.
Applicants coop is designed to be used-in connection with a wire netting yard (not shown).
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A brooder coop for chicks, comprising a base provided with an out-turned supporting flange having slots at opposite sides thereof, a raised platform having a marginal downward shoulder-extension joined to said flange, and a casing tting over said base around said shoulder extension and resting l upon said flange, said casing having a stationary hook lug engaging the slot at one 1 side of said flange and a pivoted hook lug engaging the slot at the opposite side of the fiange.
2. A brooder coop for chicks, comprising a base provided with an out-turned supporting flange, a raised platform having a marginal downward shoulder-extension joined to said flange, and a casing fitting over said base around said shoulder extension and resting upon said flange, said casing being formed of sheet metal, having sloping roof walls, lapping corner tongues at the ends, upper central lapping connected tongues at each end and insertion strips at the ends fitting under and having connection with the corner tongues.
3. A brooder coop for chicks, having an open bottom casing of sheet metal provided with sloping roof walls, sloping end walls and sloping side walls, lapping corner tongues at the ends, upper central lapping connected tongues at the ends and trape- Zoidal insertion strips at the ends fitting under and having connection with the corner tongues.
4. A brooder coop for chicks and the like, comprising sloping roof walls, sloping side walls and sloping end walls, said coop being formed of sheet metal having its angle portions of the same piece, upper marginal lapping tongues at each end, a sheet metal insertion strip at each end fitting under said lapping tongues having rivet connection therewith, provided with upper and lower bent flanges and a sliding door engaging the same, and a base having a marginal shoulder and opposite seats, said coop having a stationary hook lug engaging the seat at one side of said base and a pivoted hook engaging the seat at the opposite side of said base.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES P. RICHARDS. lVit-nesses F. BURNER, L. S. NEAL.
