GEORGE A. CHAPMAN, OF WOONSOOKET, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMEN'I IN MACHINES FOR FIXING COUPLINGS TO SHAFTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,524, dated November 30, 1875; application filed October 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. CHAPMAN, of Woonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Shaft-Coupling Forcing Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description of the construction and my coupling device, and Fig. 3 is a plan viewthereof. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail views.
This invention has relation to means for securing coupling flanges or collars on the ends of shafts; and the nature of my invention consists in the combination, with clampingblocks, ofa forcing-screw mounted in a suitable frame or carriage, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a rectangular frame, which is strongly put together and mounted on legs B, which may or may not be sustained by rollers. A rectangular recess is made in one of the cross-bars of frame A, in which two flanged or plain clamping-blocks, O G, are applied, between which the shaft D is confined to receive its coupling or collar E. When shaft D is applied between the blocks 0 a cap, F, which is pivoted at a, is swung around over the upper block and forcibly pressed down by means of a screw, 12, which'passes through a slot, b in the free end of said cap. Having secured the shaft D against end movement, the collar E is adjusted partly on the end of this shaft and forced home thereon by means of a screw, G,
the innerend of which is beveled and recessed, as shown in Fig. 2.
A cap, 0, should be adjusted between the coupling E and screw G, forthe latter to act against when forcing a coupling on shaft I).
To remove the coupling from the shaft a saddle, J, is adjusted on the shaft, as shown in Fig. 2, and a block, 9, slightly smaller than the bore of the coupling, is placed between the screw G and shaft D, and the latter is forced from the coupling, as shown in Fig. 2.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with'clamping-blocks O G or their equivalent, the clam ping-cap F and the screw G mounted in aframe, substantially in the manner described.
2. In a machine for forcing couplings on shafts, the cap F in combination with a clamping device and a screw, G, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. I
' GEORGE A. CHAPMAN. Witnesses:
GEORGE A. WILBUR, CHRISTOPHER ROBINSON.
