Description

F. H. STUMPFE.
Flut-ing-Iron.
' No. 226,803. Patented April 20,1880.
7 ZM/% a v'ito 7w UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
FLORENCE H. STUMPF, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
FLUTlNG-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,803,'dated April 20, 1880.
Application filed June 18, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORENCE H. STUMPF. of St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fluting-Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figurel of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2is a top-plan view of the heating-plate or bed-piece.
This invention has relation to fluting devices, and the object or purpose thereof is to provide means whereby a series of diagonal or bias flutes are imparted to the fabric during the process of flnting; and the invention therefore consists in a fluting-bed in-which the flutes run diagonally with the rim or edge thereof, in connection with a fluting-roller having a series of diagonal or spiral flutes to operate in connection with the flirting-bed.
The invention further consists in the pecnliar construction of the handle of the flu-tingroller, as will be hereinafter described.
I construct a bed-plate, A, of any suitable form or of any material desired, and provide said bed-plate upon its upper surface with flutes a, the same disposed parallel with each other and running at an angle or diagonally to the edge or outer rim of the bed, which form together a diagonal liming-surface.
The bed-plate A may be formed with a mortised or slotted projection, b, for the insertion of a stove-hook or other device, for the convenience of handling.
The bed-plate may be formed upon its under side with projecting ridges, which fit within correspondingly-formed recesses upon the upper side or face of a heating-plate, B, to prevent it from being displaced, or retain it in position with relation to the heating-plate during the operation of fiutin g. V
The roller 0, which may either be solid'or hollow, has upon its face flutes 0, running in a spiral direction around the same, or at such an angle to the axis of the roller as to fit or register with the diagonal fluting-spaces upon the bed-plate A.
The handleD is made from band or strap iron, and is composed of a single piece, the ends there of having suitable holes to form bearings for the axial pins d, secured to the ends of the roller. The handle D is formed by twisting the band-iron at that point between the handle and the roller, so that the width of the band will be in a direction parallel to the axis of the roller, thereby preventing the edge of the band from cutting or otherwise injuring the hands.
I am aware that it is old, and do not desire to be understood as claiming, broadly, a fluting-roller having journals with a handle, consisting of a bar secured at its middle to -a shank at right angles therewith, and extending across a bifurcated or U shaped bar, which straddles the flnting-roller; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1.. A handle for tinting-rollers, composed of a single piece of band or strap iron, and twisted or bent, substantially as described, at a point between the roller and handle, so as to bring the width of the band forming the handle parallel with the axis of the roller, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a bed formed with or having a series of flutes running parallel to each other and disposed diagonally'with the rim or edge of said bed,'of a roller having a series of spiral or diagonal flutes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
FLORENCE H. STUMPF.
Witnesses:
