SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,143, dated October 19, 1886.

To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Wnrrrnvc- HAM, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and I1nproved ScafioldOlamppf which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to clamps for supporting the lateral bearers for scaffold-floors on the scaftoldposts, and has for its object to pr0- vide an efiective device of this character, whereby splitting of the clainp-blocks will be prevented and the safe use of the scaffolds be promoted.
The invention consists in certain novel fea tures of construction and combinations of parts of the scaffold-clamp, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation of part of a scaffoldpost with a bearer clamp-block held thereto, in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a plan View with the post and clamp-block in horizontal section on the line a: m, Fig. 1.
The metal yoke A. otthe clamp embraces the clamp-block B and the scaffold-post C. A roller, D, on a pin, E, fixed to the opposite sidebars, (t a, of the yoke A passes through an inclined slot, Z), in the clampbloek, and the outer ends of the side bars of the yoke are connected or stayed by a cross-pin, E, which serves to hold the yoke in position on the clamp-block.
The cross-bar c of the yoke A is provided with a series of teeth or spurs, G, which prevent downslip of the block by entering the scaffold-post O at its side or face opposite that against which the clamp-block B is tightened by the downward pressure of a scaffold-bearer (not shown) 011 top of the clamp-block.
It will be noticed that the cross-pin and roller E D of the clamp are together somewhat less in diameter than the width of the clampblock slot Z). Consequently the weight of the scaffold-bearer on the block B will wedge the block ti ghtlyto the post A, as the spurs G enter the post, and the pressure of the roller D will come altogether 011 the inner wall or face of the slot b, and no outward pressure will be exerted by the roller on the narrow or thin part b of the block outside of the slot Z). Consequently there will be no liability of breaking out than the diameter of the Serial No. 210,112. (No model.)
this part b of the block and endangering the workman using the scaffold, as there is when the cross-pin or roller bears outwardly on the thin part of the block outside ofthe slot.
The clamp may be used without the roller D. or with the pin E only in the slot 1) of the clamp-block; but the construction with the roller is preferred, as it brings less wear on the block and clamp,and holds securely. The use of the cross-pin or stay F is also optional, as will readily be understood.
It is obvious that with the roller and crosspin arranged in the slot of the clamp-block, the roller and pin are not so liable to be damaged by rough handling of the clamp as they are when arranged outside of a concaved face or edge of a clamp-block, as has heretofore been done.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The con'ibination, in a scallbld-clamp, and with a post, 0, of a yoke, A, provided with a cross-pin and roller, as at ED, and a block, B, having an inclined. slot, 1), through which the pin and roller pass, and said slot made wider than the diameter of the pin and roller, substantially as shown and described,whereby the pressure of the pin and roller on the clampblock will come only at the inner wall of the slot 1), asset forth.
2. The combination, in a scatlold-clamp, and with a post, 0, of a yoke, A, having spurs G- on its cross-bar, and provided with across pin and roller, as at E D, and a block, B, hav
ing an inclined slot, I), through which the pin and roller E D pass, and said slot made wider pin and roller, substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination, in a, scaffold-clamp, and with a post, O, of a yoke, A, having spurs G on its cross-bar, and tied or braced at its outer ends by a pin, F, and provided with a crosspin and roller, as at E D, andablock, B, having an inclined slot, 1), through which the pin and roller E D pass, and saidslot made wider than the diameter of the substantially as shown and described.
