Description

March 5, 1929. o. w. SCHMIDT DOUBLE WEAR HARNESS ATTACHMENT Filed Aug, 25, 1928 smart Patented Mar. 5, 1929.
UNITED; STATES ATENT: Q IC DOUBLE-WEAR HARNESS LTTACHIEYT.
i Application M Am 23, was. semi n. 301,473.
This invention relates to an attachment for harness and has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive reinforcing element for that portion of the harness which is most easily worn out, namely, the joints ofthe leather parts with the hardware.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of such a device which is constructed as a unit and which may be readily applied to the harness without the use of harness-makers tools or skilled labor.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing; in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a breeching strap with the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the attachment per se, the same being shown in its operative position in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawing in more detail the numeral 1 designates generally a piece of harness, here shown as a breeching strap, although it is to be understood that the reinforcement to be described is intended for use in connection with any and all joints between the straps and the hardware of the harness.
The several straps 2, 3 and 4 of the harness are attached to the metal ring 5 in the usual way and the attachment to be described is inserted between the ring and the loop portions of the straps so as to revent wear on the loops until such time as t e attachment is worn through, thereby greatly extending the life of the harness. i
The attachment consists merely of a stri of leather 6 and a metal loop 7. The loop is provided with a flat lip or foot 8 by means of which it is riveted or otherwise connected to the strip as indicated b the numeral 9. From an inspection of the rawing it will be noted that the loo 7 projects from the foot 8 at an angle slig tly greater than a right angle and is therefore inclined at an acute angle to strip 6, as indicated in Figure 3. The strip 6 is of a width equal to the external width of the loop 7 throughout the greater portion of its length but is notched at both sides of its other end as indicated by numeral 10 so as to rovide the relatively narrow portion 11 w 'ch is adapted to be inserted through loop 7 when the attachment is put Portion llof the strip 6 is also tapered in place on the harness. In this connection toward itsfree end so as to provide. a rela tively thinend 12whichwill more readily conform to the structure of the harnessand rmlt the usual sliding band 13 to be rou ht back into position to lock the parts 1n p ace.
In applying the attachment to the usual harness construction it is only necessar to disengage the usual buckles found on arthe loop 7 over the strap until the stri 6 is brou ht into position where it forms a ining tor the loop which engages ring 5. The portion 11 of the strip 6 is doubled over upon the main body of the strip and its end passed through loop 7 until the shoulders 10 on the strip engage the edges of the loop. The band 13 1s now slid 1nto place and caused to tightly clamp the tapered portion 12 of the strip 6 against the body of the harness strap and also serves as a stop to prevent movement of the loop 7 along the strap.
I am aware that other devices have been provided for increasing the life of harness devices are either made of metal or else are too expensive and cumbersome to be of prac- A a narrow strip of leather or the more, may not only be attached to the har-.
ness at the factory but also may be readily applied by the teamster, farm hand, or other person having to do with draft animals, with out the use of tools and in a minimum of time. p i
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described what I now "believe to be the best embodiment of my invention, but Ido not wish to be understood therebyjas limiting myself or the scope of the inventlon, as many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention; all such I aim to include in the scope of the appended claims. a y p a What claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
70 ness straps such as breeching straps and slide y 85 y reinforcing the strap loops but such prior 1. A reinforcement for astrap loop, in cluding a strip of leather having one end of a Width slightly greater than that of the loop to be reinforced, the opposite end of said strip being slightly reduced in width, a metal loop secured to the wider end of. said strip adapted to engage the sidewalls of the'metal loop when the relatively narrow end of the strip is passed into the loop.
3. In a harnessinclnding a ring, a strap having a loop interlocked with said ring and a band encircling said strap, the combination of a strip of leather lining the interior of said loop, a metal loop fixed to one end of said strip and passed over a portion of said strap, the opposite end of said strip being beveled and providinga wedging action in conjunction with said band to lock the strip in place when the band is slid along the strap to operative position.
