F IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,082, dated November 16, 1875; a plication filed October 21, 1875.
(Lisa B.
set forth in the following specificatiomdescribing a quadruple -bosom shirt, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
The object of 'my invention is to produce a shirt with four bosoms. entire, and, preferably, open front and back, sothat the same shirt may easily fit men of At the bosom part of the body the shirt is made something like a nightshirt-that is, plain, and the bosom part left in. On each side I attach a bosom to the body in the same manner as shown in another application for Letters Patent filed herewith-that is, on the side where the single bosom is usually attached, but, preferably, free and unattached at bottom and part way up the sid esay, where the bottom part of the bosom is cut away diagonally, or curved inward, so as to diminish the size of the bottom .of the bosom in some forms. To the free edge or side of each bosom I attach another bosom-say, of a similar general shape, but with the front so placed as to face in a direction reverse to the other bosom, and so that when folded onto and in front of the same it will show its own front, and conceal that of the other, and be capable of being reversed under the other face to back, and concealed itself in turn thereby; and in this, which I also attach in duplicate on each side, myinvention consists.
Figure 1 is a front view of the shirt-body B. Fig. 2 is a front view of the bosom A, to be attached, but before being attached, to the body; and, also, the back view of'the bosom A, which is, in turn, attached to its side. Fig. 3 is the same for the bosoms A and A of the opposite sides. Fig. 4. is a front view, showing the bosoms A and A in front. Fig. 5 is a front view, showing the bosoms A and A in front. Figs. 6 and 7 L are sectional views of each in order, out on lines .90 w.
The arrangement is such that either set of I make the body bosoms may be in front, and also any one of the whole'at will, and the others underneath, and all free as to the body of the shirt'B, e2:- cept where seeuredon the respective edges of the bosoms A and A of the opposite sides.
These bosoms may be made, if desired, of various colors, materials, designs, construction, forms, and patterns. They may be made all difi'erent from each other, or different only in part. Any arrangement for studs, buttons, or other ornaments may be used on the same.
The advantages of this arrangement are,
that the four bosoms are all independent and free, so as not to be disturbed by the movements of the body inany direction, and this whatever may be the size of the wearer, within reasonable limits, without tearing the shirtbody. Any one of four soiled bosoms may be turned in, and any one of the unsoiled brought to the front-a convenience in traveling at times, as a change can be made, without difficulty or offense, in a car or in many public places.
Either of these sets may be omitted from eitherside, and still leave a part of my invention present. All these bosoms are without neck-bands, the band being on the shirtbody, and the necks of the bosoms, especially the outer ones of each pair, being so curved and sloped on each side of the neck as to conform, or be capable of conforming, to the neck and neck-band of the shirt, both when the bosom-frontis in view, and when the same is reversed or hidden from view.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with a shirt-body, the bosom A, formed and constructed as described, and the bosom A, secured to each other on the upper part of the side, and on one. the bosom'A being attached to the,
side only, outer edge of "the bosom A, with its face inward in reverse, so as to fold outward and appear face in front or inward, and be concealed by the bosom A, in the manner specified and set forth.
2. In combination with a shirt-body, the
bosoms A, A, A, and A, the two former PATENT omca l'voose attached direetly to the shirt-body, on the by the operation of foldi gand unfolding, as
upper part of one side only, the latterbeing set forth. v
attached to said bosoms in the same Way, SIMEON GUTMANN and havingtheir outer edges left free and unattached, as shown and described, and all In the presenee 0f arranged in relation to each other, so that THEODORE R. SHEA-R, either bosom may be made to appear in front JAMES A. SKELTON.
